We take this opportunity to commend the Supreme Court of Cameroon for its recent decision in the NERA 10 case. On 19th March 2026, the Court ordered that the matter be sent back for retrial—an important development in what has been a long and complex legal process. 2. As international legal experts and advocates engaged in this matter, we submitted an amicus curiae brief through our local counsel, Joseph Fru, to assist the Court by presenting additional legal perspectives. 3. We are encouraged that aspects of our submission were considered, and we extend our appreciation to all legal practitioners involved for their professionalism and engagement with the issues raised. 4. This case carries significant implications for both Nigeria and Cameroon, particularly regarding concerns surrounding the alleged illegal rendition of the NERA 10 in violation of the principle of non-refoulement. 5. We have also pursued related proceedings before international mechanisms addressing arbitrary detention, where notable progress has been made. 6. The principle of non-refoulement prohibits states from returning individuals to jurisdictions where they face risks such as persecution, torture, inhuman or degrading treatment, or threats to life and freedom. 7. It remains a cornerstone of international refugee and human rights law, widely recognized as part of customary international law and binding beyond specific treaty obligations. 8. We view the decision to order a retrial as a meaningful step toward fairness and due process in this matter. It raises important considerations not only for the NERA 10 but also for broader cases related to Southern Cameroons and the evolving legal and political landscape in the region. 9. We will continue to monitor developments closely and remain committed to advocating for justice, the rule of law, and the protection of fundamental human rights. Dear world , I am one of the International legal point men NERA 10 Today, the NERA 10 will appear before the Supreme Court of Cameroon 🇨🇲 for judgment on whether their life imprisonment by a military court was lawful. They were abducted and subjected to extraordinary rendition through alleged collaboration between the Nigerian government under the late Muhammadu Buhari and the authorities in Yaoundé, in violation of international law, including the principle of non-refoulement. Nigerian courts have already ruled that their transfer was illegal and ordered their return. The case was also taken to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, where a judgment was made in their favor regarding the illegality of their rendition.
