EXPLAINER- What is so special about the new 15-car EMU local on WR Mumbai? EMU local trains have been working in Mumbai in units of three. Three coaches form one unit. An earlier old 9-car train had three such units. The present 12-car has four such units. They are manufactured so in units of four by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and despatched to Mumbai and other cities as 12-car trains as per requirement. Over the years, the 15-car EMU has been a Mumbai phenomenon because of the overcrowding and demand. To creatre them, the local workshops here in Mumbai disassemble a four-unit 12-car EMU and create 15-car trains by adding one more unit. Historically, this was done first by WR in 2009. So what ICF has now done is it has begun manufacturing 15-car EMUs at their factory so that Mumbai gets a ready-made 15-car train with five units of three-cars each. Its a variant. 12 such rakes will be manufactured in the forthcoming period. The speciality is then it is a factory-fresh Mumbai-ready 15-car EMU local train.

Surat/ Udhna stations receive large number of passengers on Diwali and Chhath. To cater to the passengers from Surat, Udhna & nearby vicinity, around 40 originating Festival Special trains with almost 530 trips are being run from Udhna/Surat. Also, additional unreserved trains are being run looking into the extra rush of passengers. With meticulous planning & seamless coordination, Western Railway is ensuring smooth dispersal of passengers at Udhna to their hometowns. The video shared is of 19th October, 2025, where an unprecedented rush of passengers gathered at Udhna station. However, with dedicated efforts, by evening 04:00 pm, Western Railway cleared the rush and all the passengers were comfortably accommodated in trains to their hometowns. On 19th October, 2025, around 36000 passengers travelled from Udhna by the various trains. This is the highest number of passengers travelled in a single day and is an increase of 44% as compared to last year, wherein 25000 passengers travelled in a single day. Adequate crowd management and control measures have also been taken like creation of holding areas on East and West sides of Surat and Udhna stations, increased booking windows and shifts, adequate RPF, GRP, Ticket checking and booking staff with close monitoring by senior officers. 11 extra Ticket windows are being operated with 38 shifts. Additionally, adequate staff have been deployed with mobile UTS to issue tickets to passengers waiting at the holding area. Passengers first come to the holding areas where there are adequate facilities for sitting, lights & fans, drinking water and toilet facilities. Drinking water bottles are also being distributed to the passengers waiting in the queues. Medical assistance and Ambulance is also available, in case of emergencies. Regular announcements are also done. The crowd is monitored in real time so that quick action can be taken if needed. Queuing facilities are there to ensure passengers arrive at platforms and board their coaches in an orderly and disciplined manner. We request you to take cognizance of our efforts and help passengers to reach their hometowns to celebrate the festival with their family as well as near and dear ones.
