This @DailyMonitor article from earlier this week is a timely reminder, especially now, with secondary school students on holiday. The story features young people using their break to learn practical trades like shoe-making. Not only does this fight idleness and put some pocket money in their hands, but it also builds a foundation for independence and the realities of adulthood. More importantly, it highlights a critical avenue for helping youth develop alternative skills and secure income in the informal sector. Looking at the numbers: every year, an estimated 700,000 people in Uganda enter the job market from universities and tertiary institutions to compete for roughly 90,000 available jobs. This means that while formal education is critical, a degree alone is often not enough to guarantee a sustainable livelihood. We need to destigmatise vocational trades and champion technical skills as dignified work. Just like in developed economies, fields such as plumbing, mechanics, and construction offer immense opportunities for sustainable careers. When youth are given hands-on skills, mentorship, and access to supportive networks, they grow into problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, and drivers of local economic growth. This is exactly why initiatives like the @reachahand Youth Clinic matter so much. Through practical training in sewing, basket weaving, hairdressing, and other vocational skills, young people are building confidence and turning their talents into income-generating ventures that serve their communities. It’s also why Uganda’s TVET Council is rightfully pushing to equip every post-secondary graduate with practical skills as a crucial step toward addressing the country’s youth unemployment. True education must go beyond textbooks and examinations to equip young people with the tools to create their own opportunities, earn with dignity, and respond to real challenges in their communities. #ReachAHandAfrica #RAHUAt15

Reminds me of Montel Jordan’s 1995 hit song, ‘This Is How We Do It.’ 5 degrees from top universities, including @StanfordLaw. No fake degrees, just the right way. Read, write, research, and produce knowledge. Congratulations to you, my brother @RKirunda, upon your graduation. A true academic giant. We can now proudly call you Dr. Kirunda. Now we have to reconvene at Plot 2 to toss to this and more. The only one holding us back is @JGkibande. Mate, finish up your Ph.D study and do not deny us a fine celebration. For me, I am already a witchdoctor 😂

The Tumusiime Mutebile Foundation
A powerful step toward strengthening Uganda’s private sector. At the MoU signing between Makerere University and the Tumusiime Mutebile Foundation, Hon Amama Mbabazi emphasized the importance of building a partnership grounded in knowledge, national development, and shared values. He noted that Uganda’s future prosperity will depend on a strong, competitive, and innovative private sector — one that nurtures entrepreneurs, supports innovation, strengthens policy, and builds practical skills for sustainable growth. The remarks also highlighted the critical role of academia in shaping national progress, with Makerere University recognized as a fitting home for research, policy reflection, and the development of ideas that drive transformation. In honouring the legacy of Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile, the message was clear: true legacy lies in action — translating ideas into impact, empowering young people, strengthening institutions, and fostering collaboration between academia, policymakers, and the private sector. May this partnership honour Governor Mutebile in the best possible way: by producing ideas, institutions, and opportunities that serve Uganda well. #TumusiimeMutebileFoundation #MakerereUniversity #PrivateSectorDevelopment #Uganda #EconomicGrowth #Leadership #Innovation #Legacy
