I took my 11 year old to her checkup this morning and the nurse asked me to step out of the room for a moment. I politely declined and she said, "It's just for a moment." And I told her, "No thank you, given all the stories about children being abused my husband and I decided to never leave our children alone with anyone, even medical providers. Anything you need to do or say you can do with me in the room." She looked all miffed and just left, no idea what her plan was but she didn't feel the need to continue it with me present and that makes me even more suspicious?? When she left my daughter thanked me for not leaving, she's already shy about the doctor, her eyes got so wide when the lady asked me to leave.

@bliss4kwp @wookie_cookiee @alibrooke4ever The protocol is for a doctor to REQUEST time alone with an adolescent. This request can be declined and a doctor will usually honor that. However, if abuse is suspected then there are legal ways in which a one on one visit can be made mandatory. The protocol is necessary.

Life in Canada is so depressing. I take home 57% of my wage after income tax, before sales taxes and other taxes. I make a wage in roughly the 95th percentile of incomes in my province, and if I don’t want to live in a shoebox, my wife needs to work rather than raise our two little kids.
All to provide lavish benefits to the thousands and thousands of unproductive takers, who vote themselves an ever larger share of a shrinking economic pie.

I can’t imagine why this has to be answered again, but here goes. Because there are Islamic scholars who professionally use the library. Muslims pray five times a day on a very strict schedule. They do not just pray sitting down quietly. They have physical gestures to do and words that need to be spoken out loud. The scholars asked if there would be a room that they could go to where they could privately do their thing without interrupting any of the other library patrons. The Vatican said yes, and provided them with a small space.

@alibrooke4ever I've got a feeling that mom's suspicious attitude is precisely why the nurse wanted to talk to the child alone. The kid is more likely to admit to being abused if the abuser or eanabler isn't in the room

@v_j_freeman I think this is one of the great tragedies of modern society. I am grateful to live in the same town as my parents and my wife’s parents. My children will grow up knowing the love, joy, and sometimes sorrows of family. I am blessed beyond words.

As someone who is nearing latter part of their life with older friends I am here to tell you yr children will by & large not be part of your day to day lives. They will be living their own lives. Your friends will be there day to day & your childless friends will be amongst them.

Friend of mine is 35 years old, married and doesn’t want kids. His household income is roughly $300k/yearly and his house is nearly paid off. They invest a good portion of their income for retirement, take multiple yearly vacations and live a nice life. I think people like this are going to regret not having kids in their future. One day when he’s old all he will have to look back on is the random stuff he bought and wasted money on. Instead of putting that money towards having kids and building a family he’s choosing consumerism. This just seems so wasteful and boring to me.

There are shitty abusive parents out there, that's an unfortunate fact, and if kids speaking to a doctor alone can help those kids I think you should be able to put aside this victim complex of yours.

Once you narrow it to “home with two parents, married to eachother, no prior crimes” things change pretty dramatically. Now narrow it to sexual abuse by the mother. Then I get to narrow it to “my wife” who I know shockingly well.

Can you be certain your kid will open up to the doc more than you? I’m arguing that it isn’t wrong to be careful. Know your child, family, and doc, and decide wisely.
