Dear @nitin_gadkari ji, India’s Road Safety Crisis: Time to Act, Not Count the Dead:- Every day in India, road accidents claim lives quietly, leaving behind shattered families and a society that has begun to treat such loss as routine. What should provoke outrage has instead become normalised. This silent acceptance lies at the heart of India’s worsening road safety crisis. Despite having a relatively small share of the world’s vehicles, India accounts for a disproportionately high number of global road fatalities. The causes are well known and largely preventable; faulty road design, lax enforcement of traffic laws, unsafe driving behaviour, and a weak emergency response system. Indian roads are typically designed to move traffic quickly, not to protect human life. Inadequate signage, poor lighting, unsafe intersections, and neglected accident-prone “black spots” turn daily commuting into a risky affair. Road widening alone cannot solve this problem. What is required is scientific planning, regular safety audits, proper lane markings, pedestrian crossings, and safer junction design that prioritises all road users, not just motorists. Equally alarming is the poor enforcement of traffic laws. Over-speeding, drunk driving, and non-compliance with helmet and seatbelt rules remain common. Although the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019 introduced stricter penalties, inconsistent and selective enforcement has weakened its deterrent value. Laws succeed only when implementation is uniform and predictable. The wider use of technology such as speed cameras, e-challans, and automated enforcement can reduce discretion and improve discipline on the roads. India also suffers from a deeply entrenched culture of reckless driving. Lane indiscipline, aggressive overtaking, and casual disregard for traffic rules reflect not just poor driving skills, but poor civic sense. Enforcement alone cannot change attitudes. Road safety education must begin early, be reinforced through rigorous driver training, and supported by sustained public awareness campaigns that emphasise personal responsibility. Another critical weakness lies in vehicle safety. Old and unfit vehicles, poorly maintained public transport, and weak compliance with safety standards continue to endanger lives. Strict vehicle fitness checks, enforcement of safety norms, and encouraging consumers to prioritise safety over cost are essential steps towards safer mobility. Perhaps the most tragic failure occurs after accidents. Many victims die not because their injuries are fatal, but because help arrives too late. Delays in ambulance services, inadequate trauma care facilities, and fear among bystanders of legal consequences worsen outcomes. Strengthening emergency response systems, expanding trauma centres along highways, and ensuring effective implementation of Good Samaritan protections can save lives during the crucial “golden hour”. India does not lack laws or expertise; it suffers from a lack of urgency. Road safety must be treated as a public health emergency and a governance priority. Every avoidable death on Indian roads represents a collective failure of policy, enforcement, and social behaviour. Until we place human life above speed and convenience, the casualty figures will continue to rise. Safer roads are not an aspiration, they are an achievable necessity.

The present functioning of the Mumbai Police reflects a disturbing and systemic decline, marked by arbitrariness, illegality, and a blatant disregard for statutory duties. The institution, once held as a benchmark of professionalism, is today regrettably operating on its past reputation while failing in its core obligations under law. In a matter recently brought to my attention, the police station concerned (@juhups) has willfully and deliberately failed to complete and file the charge-sheet despite the existence of overwhelming and unimpeachable evidence, including eye-witness statements duly recorded under law. The delay is not procedural or inadvertent; it is conscious, motivated, and ex facie illegal, amounting to a dereliction of duty and abuse of authority. This becomes more worrisome as CM @Dev_Fadnavis ji has recently asked the investigating authorities to file charges jeet within time. (The case in which @juhups has failed to file chargesheet was registered on 25th July 2025) Such conduct is violative of the mandate of the Code of Criminal Procedure, undermines the rule of law, and results in a direct infringement of the fundamental rights of the aggrieved party guaranteed under Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India. The continued inaction of the police clearly indicates collusion, non-application of mind, or extraneous considerations, rendering the investigation tainted and vitiated. In these circumstances, the inaction of the police has left the aggrieved party with no efficacious alternative remedy except to invoke the extraordinary writ jurisdiction of the Hon’ble High Court under Article 226 of the Constitution of India, seeking appropriate directions to compel the police authorities to discharge their statutory obligations fairly, expeditiously, and in accordance with law, and for consequential action against the delinquent officers. As an advocate, I really want police to do their duty property else it's an additional burden on the court of law which is already overburdened.
