That's what the old studies show Building a stadium with an entertainment complex (hotels, condos, office space, etc) that keep tax revenue coming in year round are great business and that's what this is. The one "economist" that got all the pub for saying the Braves milked the county was proven wrong, once the tax revenue increased dramatically. This is not a "stadium deal". This is building a small town full of tax revenue that the city and county need.

The fact is that Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay were historically more developed than the rest of Latin America, forming the "South Cone." This region was relatively well developed, competing with the US for European immigrants. However, after many crises and macroeconomic underperformance, the South Cone had largely converged with Latin America by the late 20th century. For example look how well the Battery has done in Atlanta. I also believe that in order to grow revenue you need to be willing to fund large projects.

The Rays stadium/sports district is extremely important to the Tampa Bay area for more than baseball. The NFL now requires sports/entertainment districts next to the stadium to even be considered for future Super Bowls. Miami just found out they are no longer eligible earlier this month. If Tampa wants to host the biggest events this deal needs to happen. We get to keep the Rays, bring a world class entertainment district, and secure the biggest events going forward for all of Tampa.
