🗽 On this day 250 years ago — July 14, 1776 Just days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, a small but telling moment of principle played out in New York Harbor. Admiral Lord Richard Howe (brother of British commander General William Howe) sent a letter to George Washington under a flag of truce, addressed only to “George Washington, Esq.” — deliberately omitting his military rank. Washington’s aides (including Colonel Joseph Reed) met the British officer halfway between Governors Island and Staten Island. They refused the letter, stating there was “no such person” by that title in their army and insisting it be properly addressed to recognize Washington’s rank and the Continental Army’s legitimacy. This was no mere protocol — it was Americans refusing to let the British diminish their new status as an independent people. At the same time, thousands of British troops were landing on Staten Island (starting July 2) ahead of the New York Campaign and Battle of Long Island. A quiet but powerful stand for dignity and independence in the early days of the Revolution. 🇺🇸 #July14 #OnThisDay #AmericanRevolution #250Years #GeorgeWashington #DeclarationOfIndependence #AmericanHistory

1. Giffords backs efforts to ban body armor. 2. Of all the many kinds of violent crime that gun control can't stop, it can't stop political assassinations the most. The typical suspect is smarter than average, with no criminal record to speak of. Once again, what Giffords means by "too easy for dangerous people to buy guns" is that they think all civilian ownership of guns should end. Nothing short of that is going to stop an assassin from getting a gun (and probably not even that, e.g., the Shinzo Abe assassination).
Chris Harris@ChrisHarrisKC

This is horrible. I agree it’s too easy for dangerous people to buy guns and cause harm.

To tell you just how insane this is, just last week, Gov. Hochul helped break ground on a massive $100 billion, 20-year semiconductor megaproject in Clay, NY. The memory chips power the AI revolution — which would go into data centers! So, make the chips but not the data centers? How dumb is this?

“If we expand the electorate to include highly uninformed, grossly immature people that almost no other society deems responsible enough to vote, it will be a boon to socialists” is quite the admission from Jacobin.
Jacobin@jacobin

Changing the voting age in the US from 18 to 16 would make the country more democratic. It could also boost support for ambitious socialist politicians like Zohran Mamdani. jacobin.com/2026/07/democr…

This was a thing that really took off in the early Trump years: outlets, who had traditionally treated someone’s death as a moment to avoid criticism, used conservative deaths as an opportunity for grave dancing. But only conservatives. Not terrorists or dictators or the like.

Hearing good things about the new Seahawks owners. Doesn't mean squat yet, but hearing the executives including Schneider were impressed by them. Look forward to meeting them. This thing is important to all of us. Take care of it like the Allen's did.

A simple definition of propaganda is “manufactured consent.” It took SEVEN MONTHS for NPR to correct this story. “our reverence for the truth might be a distraction that’s getting in the way of finding common ground and getting things done”
Eric Daugherty@EricLDaugh

🚨 LMFAO! NPR had to make a MAJOR correction to their story about Nick Shirley NPR initially said Shirley reported to expose “$110,000 in fraud” NPR: “In fact, it was $110 MILLION in fraud.” 🤯🤯🤯 DON’T STOP, @nickshirleyy! 🔥

There was a shameful and intentional campaign to attack and try to delegitimize the current court. The consequences of that campaign is that many crazy people felt justified to threaten and target Justices who they don’t like, which resulted in real threats on their life.
CSPAN@cspan

Justice Amy Coney Barrett on how threats have affected her family: "Maybe I lack imagination, but I didn't expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one."

A reminder that @EcologyWA literally erased a claim on their web page that the state’s tax on CO2 emissions would only increase prices by a few pennies because it was so inaccurate. Now they are back to claiming there is no clear impact. Just crazy. #waleg

@WarrenPlatts @peterrhague @guy_herbert I think it was in the mid to late '70s. They started either alternating colors or designating incumbents by color, depending on the networks or publication. If they wanted to get spicy and make people think for a moment, they'd resume that, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The socialist regards society much as a child regards supper: he notices with great precision who received the largest slice, while remaining curiously uninterested in who rose at dawn to bake the thing. Socialists always imagine themselves at the table, never in the kitchen.
