🗽 On this day 250 years ago — July 14, 1776
Just days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted, a small but telling moment of principle played out in New York Harbor.
Admiral Lord Richard Howe (brother of British commander General William Howe) sent a letter to George Washington under a flag of truce, addressed only to “George Washington, Esq.” — deliberately omitting his military rank.
Washington’s aides (including Colonel Joseph Reed) met the British officer halfway between Governors Island and Staten Island. They refused the letter, stating there was “no such person” by that title in their army and insisting it be properly addressed to recognize Washington’s rank and the Continental Army’s legitimacy.
This was no mere protocol — it was Americans refusing to let the British diminish their new status as an independent people.
At the same time, thousands of British troops were landing on Staten Island (starting July 2) ahead of the New York Campaign and Battle of Long Island.
A quiet but powerful stand for dignity and independence in the early days of the Revolution. 🇺🇸

1. Giffords backs efforts to ban body armor.
2. Of all the many kinds of violent crime that gun control can't stop, it can't stop political assassinations the most. The typical suspect is smarter than average, with no criminal record to speak of.
Once again, what Giffords means by "too easy for dangerous people to buy guns" is that they think all civilian ownership of guns should end. Nothing short of that is going to stop an assassin from getting a gun (and probably not even that, e.g., the Shinzo Abe assassination).

A banned book would be completely inaccessible or prohibitively expensive. Every single one of the banned books on Dua Lipa's list is available on Amazon for under $40. The vast majority are available for under $20. Most can be bought for under $10.

Bombshell admission. Even liberal Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan acknowledges that the Federal Judicial Center's reference manual's chapter on climate science is a biased dumpster fire.
Federal Judicial Center Director Judge Robin Rosenberg agrees.
This should only increase the pressure on the National Academies of Science to pull the climate science chapter from the judicial reference manual.

Justice Kagan, who notably wrote the foreword for the Federal Judicial Center’s latest reference manual, details the problems with its biased climate science chapter and why FJC Director Judge Rosenberg ultimately pulled the chapter from the manual: “The entire purpose of this book really is not to take positions on contested and contestable matters; it’s to help judges, assist judges, with respect to scientific issues, but not with any kind of slant either way...I think that Judge Rosenberg’s hope is that things will be learned from this experience, and that the Federal Judicial Center won’t ever find itself in this position again.”

There was a shameful and intentional campaign to attack and try to delegitimize the current court. The consequences of that campaign is that many crazy people felt justified to threaten and target Justices who they don’t like, which resulted in real threats on their life.
