@walter_kev96767 @Jason___YYC I study my municipal budget when it comes out every year. Community centers, parks, festivals, zoning, Those are all things I value and am happy to pay for on an ongoing basis. Also gas tax is far too small to pay for all roadwork. It would have to go up 5x without property tax

The roads are paid for by the gasoline tax. Plumbing leaving my house is paid for in my sewer bill, not taxes. The fire department is volunteer, like everywhere outside of big cities. You list 3 things not funded by property taxes to call someone an idiot. Maybe go to anger management classes, or better, go speak to a priest.

@TXChuck777 @OutofSpecDetail Not true. If you brought this car to a ionna station today, it would charge at 400kw flat from zero to 88%. That is game-changing as it is.

“But the brand new 2026 ground up EV with 10%-80% in 30 minutes if fine” I’m glad y’all enjoy sitting around waiting at chargers picking dandelions… This is what actually matters to the larger public is charging basically as quick as you can fill a gas tank. Amazing innovation ⚡️⚡️⚡️

So y’all have probably seen the BYD crazy charging claims shown at MFR demos etc I went to a random dealership, found a crashed car, and plugged it in to see what happened More importantly is that the Gen 2 Blade LFP cell that will power every BYD EV is capable of this charging time. This means even the cheapest BYD car will charge just as fast as their top models, and they’ll all reach full in under 10 minutes. 🤯 So, while companies are still launching cars with 10-80% times in the 30 minute range, a little BYD Dolphin will soon do it in around 6 minutes. Go ahead, tell me again how slow charging EVs are acceptable? ⚡️ ⚡️

Is per-kWh price a factor when you choose which DCFC to stop at on a road trip? We’re finally at the point where major routes have major options (I remember when that wasn’t the case!), and those options come with a real range of amenities, power levels, and pricing. Personally, I’ll go out of my way to avoid just about any DCFC priced above $0.50/kWh - I typically pay under $0.40/kWh, assuming ~200kW+ / 500A+ to pull full power on my F-150 Lightning. That usually puts me on IONNA, Mercedes-Benz High-Power Charging, and Tesla Superchargers with membership ($12.99/month is paid for in the savings of a single charge on my Lightning, though it's very annoying I can't use PnC and get the discounted rate). For AC / Level 2, I won’t bother plugging in unless it’s below $0.20/kWh (and only if I actually need it, like at a hotel) or free - opportunity charging or better parking. Public charging is still priced too high across the board, and hotel AC charging is the worst offender. Hotels need to view EV charging as an amenity - more like the pool or gym - rather than a profit center like the overpriced minibar snacks. Having charging attracts guests that would otherwise pick a different hotel that has (reasonably priced) charging. What are your thresholds?

Do you know how hard it is to find a HVAC contractor that will install a modern heat pump? “Heat pumps are overrated.” “They don’t work in freezing temps.” “They’re more prone to failure.” Um, no? The latest inverter cold-climate systems use fundamentally different technology with variable-frequency compressors and enhanced vapor injection that maintain full capacity at -5°F and rated operation to -22°F. These are among the most efficient air-source systems available. And keep in mind, I’m willing to pair a heat pump with an efficient gas furnace for a dual-fuel setup if it makes sense. But I have yet to find someone who will even entertain the idea of installing one, especially a MrCool or Gree Flexx, which typically means the contractor can’t hide behind an un-itemized quote. I knew the HVAC industry was riddled with middlemen who make money through commissions and hidden markups, but I wasn’t expecting such fear mongering. It’s eerily similar to the vibe from 8 years ago when I decided to ditch my gas car for an electric vehicle. Back then everyone said I was crazy, but they just didn’t realize how much the technology had improved. Now, electric vehicles are everywhere. I have a feeling it will be the same for modern heat pumps in homes. Am I wrong?

@thrillhouse416 @suchnerve You can easily charge 40 miles a day on L1. That's fine for many many people. And for some borderline cases, you can go to a DC charger once a week or two to make up a shortfall.

@vogonpoetry_HPP @suchnerve Hmm. Yeah, that would cover normal use. There’s plenty of charging stations around if I found this insufficient from time to time. They should be leaning harder on this point (or I should pay more attention).

@joebdaman @suchnerve The key for most people is that they never draw the battery down. If you start at 100% drive the car 30 miles a day and plug in at L1 when possible, you'll probably end the week at 100%.

@suchnerve It's not feasible but if you needed to plug it in overnight a couple of times to get enough range to make it to a charger the next day it's fine. I think it's roughly 1.44kw an hour which would take 50+ hours to fully charge an ioniq5

6 years of living in Texas and I've come to the conclusion that the no state income tax thing is basically a scam. The property taxes are so high that they negate any savings. We are still paying as many taxes in Texas as we would in California. You save on gas I guess.

For the first time in Norwegian history, a bus will carry passengers in regular traffic without any human behind the wheel. The first pilot without a safety driver was tested Friday, and if all goes as planned, anyone can ride driverless buses starting in May.

Such a bummer knowing left wing transit advocacy groups are going to spend the next few decades campaigning against autonomously driven buses (which could drastically increase service hours) because they prioritize the demands of transit unions, not the riding public.

Younger Americans have moved completely away from Israel - it’s increasingly become both a cultural and political taboo.* To be investing in anything Israeli - in any industry where it’s the young consumer you need to condition as the long term, loyal and committed consumer - is an explicit and political choice not rooted in market research and brand growth, but in something transparently insidious. Boat has sailed on Israel ever being seen by young Americans as anything other than a (at minimum) pariah state.
