@opinali DLSS 4 doesn’t see in 3D either, right? That one’s trained on very high resolution game visuals and interprets the lower res graphics into the high res graphics it’s familiar with. DLSS 5 may be doing something similar but training on highest-quality models and lighting.

Daniel got important clarifications from NVIDIA. TLDR: the "DLSS5 skeptical" were right about *everything*. 1⃣ It's a 2D AI Filter. Input is only color buffer & motion vectors. The model doesn't see geometry, lights, PBR properties, normals, anything🧵 youtu.be/D0EM1vKt36s

@TheRealZophar For you, what's the biggest obstacle to enjoying an emulated game as much as you would on original hardware?

Long ago in the 90s, guy known as “Y0SHi/koitsu” reverse engineered the NES and SNES and created technical documents that paved the way for so many of the retro emulators we have today. If you could ask him anything, what would you ask? Asking for a friend. ;)

We spoke to multiple game devs and all of them hate DLSS 5: "What the fuck, Nvidia?!" One person currently attending college and studying game development, told Kotaku that after seeing DLSS 5, "it feels like there is no future for me." kotaku.com/we-spoke-to-ga…

@bestofstarwar I love that idea. The filmmakers didn’t have it but who cares? It’s great and belongs in future versions of the story.

@JayHooft I feel for DF on this one. They were clearly dazzled in person. They didn’t anticipate the differing opinions in their own organization. They somehow agreed to do a retraction but there wasn’t really anything to take back— the original story was little more than an opinion piece.

Saying that you needed to wait for the audience’s opinion is a major red flag in my opinion. 🚩 why would you need to know what we think? I’ve been doing this for 16 years and that’s a tall tail sign that you would skew your content to be less harsh or more positive based on the viewers opinions. I’m not saying that DF does this, but it’s worth noting.

@K__Med DLSS 5 looks better. And this is after years of my hating DLSS in general and RT specifically. All other Nvidia features seem like shortcuts for developers that we have to pay for, but here I can actually see an improvement without needing a technical explanation.

It's funny how most of the people I see defending DLSS 5 are basically just "you're too stupid to understand it". Kinda reminds me of how we were too stupid to understand NFTs.
Georgian Avasilcutei@nimlot26

After this whole debate about DLSS 5 I came to the conclusion that most of the people talking about it are completely unaware of what they don't know...they're on the peak of ignorance and don't even grasp how little they understand. They just heard generative AI and like Pavlov's dog they just start drooling thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators...for the love of Christ...go and educate yourself before raging on the internet for no reason. DLLS 5 is not a prompt based generator...it's not creating stuff based on someone else's images and hallucinates results. It uses the information from the raster to build up a final render frame with the same information but with better lighting and shading... I'll even give you an example on how much of an impact better shading and lighting has. This is a character I've worked on not long ago. On the left you have a raster render, with some bad shaders. On the right you have a render with raytrace on, a much better shader for both hair and skin. They don't even look like the same person...do they? This is what DLSS5 is doing....getting a result like the one on the right(tbh a lot better) at a smaller cost than actually rendering it. Still the same geo, same textures, same light sources. Some of you will go and say the one on the left is better and it's the artist's vision. It's not...it's just the artist's limitation due to shading and lighting constrains. Every single artist out there would love to get the right result in real time.

I imagine developers will have quite a difficult time implementing "neural rendering" if it becomes the norm. Take for example this; DLSS 5 currently uses gen-AI at a geometry level which yields these results as shown in the picture. When AMD comes up with their own "neural rendering" solution (they're already working on it) for PC and consoles too, the generative AI won't look the same as the one from Nvidia. Each developer will have to work with a different set of upscales that will have different result, as such no game will look the same, especially small facial features. Grace in this case here, will look totally different depending on where you're playing the game at; next-gen Xbox, PS6, AMD GPU, Intel GPU or Nvidia GPU.

@TerraWarePC I think the DLSS name makes sense. Like the upscaler, it’s trained on higher-quality visuals and shortcutting to that look.

The discussion about artistic intent is an interesting and valid one regarding DLSS 5 although what would that be in this case? The left with PT? Middle with RT? Or right full raster? What if Capcom approved the way DLSS 5 looked in their game? Would that make it more legit? I personally value what I think more when playing a game and how I tweak the visuals. Lighting can have dramatic effects on a game that aims for realism. DLSS 5 cranks this to 11 for better or worse thats up to you. Do I like it? I most certainly like the tech and see the potential it can have. Stuff like this is what separates PCs from other gaming platforms, options and breakthroughs in technologies. I love options. My biggest criticism about DLSS 5 would in the naming. I think calling it DLSS Neural Rendered Lighting or something would've made more sense but I look forward to seeing how tech like this can transform many games in my library.

The last 24 hours or so have been a phenomenal litmus test for AI content, I am completely convinced that there is a sizable section of the population who are unable to perceive the uncanny valley. For all these people unless it's growing an extra limb AI now is photo realistic.

Anyone defending DLSS 5 - These are your bedfellows. People who constantly make spelling errors, misunderstand arguments, and have zero appreciation for nuance. Then again on that last point - no surprise. If you think AI Slop looks good, you have no appreciation for nuance.

Everyone is so mad about this but it looks like an upgrade to my eyes. Video game characters look like ass on the whole and this does improve the photorealism, full stop. This wasn’t meant to be a stylistic game. It was trying to be photoreal and ran into limitations. To me this is actual utility for AI, similar to what Magnific can do to add micro details and that extra layer of polish to low res textures. Yes, the animation is still janky and to a degree it’s like putting makeup on a pig, but these are the steps to visual improvement and I’m sure that’s next. As someone who has worked in the 3D industry for over 15 years, I also feel that the tools have plateaued, and what I have access to today isn’t significantly better than what it was a decade ago. This feels like the jump from CPU rendering to GPU rendering and all I’m seeing is hate, why??

@cybercpu I think people are realizing that the initial reaction was about AI vs art. It’s clearly where resident evil and similar games were going visually, not some weird deviation. The most cogent arguments are that the character performances don’t match the realism of the models.

@pcwithspoiler_ @cybercpu @stalman It seems inevitable and even beneficial if people want to play 1500W, hyper realistic games. I don’t know if Nvidia cares about cloud gaming or they just happen to be the best at it.
