The NYT had to know how controversial Kristof’s piece was going be, so why not break it as news instead of publishing it as opinion?

Several people asked this question, so let me explain. I deeply believe the best opinion journalism is based on new reporting, so my columns are rooted in travel and reporting. In this case, I saw a story and pursued it, and because I'm a columnist it ran in the opinion section.

Zoals ik vorig jaar voorspelde: de Israël-boycot richt onherstelbare schade aan de internationale reputatie van @UGent aan. Rector De Sutter: “We hebben al veel partnerschappen verloren”. Minder onderzoeksprojecten, minder onderzoeksinkomsten, minder doctoraten. Want wie wil nog met met zo'n onbetrouwbare partner samenwerken, waar een kleine groep ideologische extremisten de plak zwaaien? Mogelijk krijgt @UGent ook sancties vanuit de VS, door de anti-BDS wetgeving die publieke universiteiten verbiedt om samen te werken met partners die Israël boycotten. En ik kreeg al meerdere mails van bezorgde ouders die hun kinderen niet naar UGent willen sturen (althans niet in menswetenschappen). Wat een ongelofelijke zonde. demorgen.be/snelnieuws/uge…
Israel the victim??? If narcissism were a crime, this could be added to the lot to be considered by the court.

Main source is Hamas front NGO (EMHRM) pushing lies, blood libels (dogs etc) for 2+ years 3) The accounts ... were corroborated with other witnesses...family members and (terror-linked) lawyers. More likely: Kristof was set up w/ eyes wide open by Hamas, EMHRM etal 4) Details were extensively fact-checked... independent research from human-rights groups -- More EMHRM and co. propaganda 5) surveys ... In reality, more manufactured, unverifiable NGO industry products 6) with U.N. testimony Parroting the same Hamas / NGO narratives... 7) Independent experts ... and fact-checking No "experts", no facts, no checks
I still can't believe that they gave the Pulitzer prize to the one who committed the scam, and not to the one who exposed it.

If this is the furious, coordinated backlash Kristof is getting for one piece, imagine what Israeli and Palestinian journalists on the ground face every day: deflection, targeting, denial, intimidation. It's the climate they've been reporting through day in and day out.
