I read a lot of confusion, so i’ve created a single picture that explains how it works. The Tesla valve creates a ‘lock’ made out of water instead of wood (the red stripe). You can see that, because of the ‘lock’ it creates a height difference which results in a waterfall after the ‘lock’ (in the blue circle).

A Tesla valve is a fixed-geometry passive check valve. It allows a fluid to flow preferentially in one direction, without any single moving part.

I posted info yesterday that was pro-nuclear and took issue with the land requirements for wind power. This triggered a bunch of green-energy warriors to argue with me. I am not against solar or wind, I own an off-grid farm that is not grid-tied and relies 100% on solar. It is illuminating when you are off-grid to find just how damn hard it is to make an intermittent energy source work. I have a big nasty diesel generator to back up my solar/battery system. It kicks on a lot more frequently than I would like. There is a lot of naivety out there about renewable energy. The “just stop oil” and green energy warriors say “just use solar and wind!”. But these systems are always backed by baseload power - coal, natgas, nuclear, or in very rare cases hydro. So no I am not against renewables, I love renewables! They allow us at the margin to reduce fossil fuel consumption, which does reduce pollution. But I find myself at odds with the people that naively argue against nuclear “because of wind and solar” or tell my friend Jusper “don’t use fossil fuels in Africa, use renewables!”. It is ignorant and harmful to keep mixing up intermittent and baseload power generation.

But solar is just electricity! My family of 6 uses 12-16 kWh a month because we do lights, charging our phones and the TV/radio! Most families of 6 use 6-8 units a month in rural Kenya. An American refrigerator uses 45 kWh a month! An American family uses about 900 kWh a month! Why the big difference? Poverty. We don't have refrigerators or dishwashers or laundry machines. The only way we will need more electricity is through us becoming better off and that can only happen through improving agriculture. A sector that 6-7 out of 10 Africans depend on for a livelihood. We need more synthetic/nitrogenous fertilizer from Fossil Fuels. We need farm machines made of steel and powered by diesel, from Fossil Fuels. We need irrigation water, from boreholes drilled by Fossil Fueled machines or desalinated salty water, and pipes + greenhouses made from lots of Fossil Fuel plastics. Then value addition. Industrialization in Africa is waiting for us to start using Fossil Fuels that we have in plenty. It's how we will end youth unemployment. With Fossil Fuels we can solve the UN development goals with the use of Fossil Fuels. Solar electricity which is available 25% of the time in the sunniest locations (12% for Germany) isn't the answer. What we need is reliable affordable versatile energy, and locally available. The best outcome for us right now is for investor opinion to rapidly oscillate between “certain recession” and “economic reacceleration” every other week for the next 3-6 months. That’s what the soft landing looks like, imo.
