Today, I had the distinct honor of hosting @FLOTUS at the Ways and Means Committee for a roundtable discussion about modernizing America’s foster care system to better support youth aging out of the foster care system. She has been a tireless advocate for our nation’s foster youth and I am grateful for her commitment to them. We heard from two foster youth, Jaydan and Jocelyn, who testified about their experience in the foster care system and gave us recommendations as to how we can reform the system to improve outcomes.

The Ways and Means Committee is building on our bipartisan work to strengthen the nation's welfare system by introducing legislation to deliver a long-overdue modernization of the Chafee program and give the nearly 16,000 youth who age out of foster care every year a more successful transition to adulthood. Missouri hasn’t historically required camps to be licensed or mandated criminal background checks for summer camp staff—but this legislation seeks to change that. This legislation is a vital step toward ensuring that the American tradition of summer camp remains a safe experience for every child.
