I remembered a moment before this war…
Whenever the Israeli army invaded my town, Beit Hanoun, my friends and I would run into the streets and throw stones toward the soldiers.
They fired bullets at us, while we had nothing but stones in our hands.
I knew that a stone was nothing compared to a weapon, but because it was my land… I felt that the stone was stronger than bullets.
That is why I never stopped.
We fought with whatever we had, throwing those stones as if we were defending everything we loved. 💔

There was a period in the early '00s where virtually every issue of The Atlantic featured both @CaitlinPacific and Christopher Hitchens (and others... Benjamin Schwarz comes to mind.) I would go to my college library and read the physical issue in a single sitting, ideally the day it arrived. Flanagan would usually be writing on topics that weren't exactly front-of-mind for a 20 year old college boy--but she's one of those writers who can make basically anything gripping to anyone. Over time I tried to pay attention to *how* she did it, along with her peers in that incredible period for the magazine. For the young me, reading Caitlin Flanagan every month was a foundation of learning how to write. Am so honored and thrilled to be her colleague now at @TheFP.

Friend came to visit us today. Intelligent person.
She explained to me the Israelis are committing genocide in Gaza.
I asked about October 7th. She said, bewildered, that people weren’t killed, just kidnapped. But she did know the Israelis killed people at a music festival.

@IMAO_ Maybe Ewan was good enough for that line there but that line is particularly bad. It is Lucas’ attempt to push mysticism into the movie after the fact. LOTR just WAS mystical. NEW HOPE WAS mystical. This is excruciating telling and not showing.

Ewan McGregor sells this line, though (but we never really felt their friendship to feel how bad this betrayal was). He's the one good thing from the prequels.

Yes, Revenge of the Sith is probably the best of the prequels, but that just means it's the best piece of garbage. I can't believe anyone would put it anywhere near the level of the original trilogy. Return of the Jedi on its worse day is still parsecs ahead of it.
