A bank we work with uses an AI tool to screen every resume that comes in. Here's how it works. We send them a candidate. Their internal recruiter runs the resume through the tool. If it scores an 8/10 or higher, the candidate gets an interview. Anything below that, auto rejected. We sent them a candidate a few weeks ago for a Python Developer role. She just ended a project for us at a competing bank with excellent references. The skills they actually needed for the role? Python, FastAPI, SQL. She had all three, used daily in her last job. The tool scored her a 7.5. Rejected. We pushed back and asked why. Turns out the job description had everything and the kitchen sink listed. Fifteen skills, half of them "nice to haves" that had nothing to do with the actual work. The AI weighted all of them equally and her score got dragged down by gaps that didn't matter. We pushed back on the internal recruiter citing she had the main skills + excellent references. We got her the interview and she got the offer. This is where internal recruiting teams are headed. AI tools layered on top of ATS systems, scoring candidates before a human ever reads the resume. In theory it saves time. In practice, it rejects qualified people because nobody bothered to write a clean job description. The tool isn't the problem, the inputs are. If your JD is a wish list instead of a job description, your AI is going to reject the exact people you're trying to hire. We're early in this. The tech will get better. But right now, a lot of great candidates are getting filtered out for reasons that have nothing to do with whether they can do the job.

All their cost of capital went up five points." When rates spiked, companies were forced to rethink everything. That cracked open a deeper problem: the hiring binge of the COVID era. "What you have happening right now is you have essentially every large company that is overstaffed." So why is AI taking the heat? @pmarca is blunt: "They all have the silver bullet excuse, right? Ah, it's AI." But the timeline doesn't hold up. Marc makes it clear the numbers simply don't support that story: "AI, until literally December, was not actually good enough to do any of the jobs that they're actually cutting. So it just can't have been AI." The same logic applies to new graduates struggling to land work. People are quick to point at automation, but Marc sees two more grounded explanations. First, the over-hiring hangover: companies that ballooned headcount during COVID are now pulling back hard and not bringing new hires in on top of that. Second, a harder conversation about skills. Marc puts it plainly: "Maybe the skill set of a lot of college graduates over the last decade doesn't necessarily match to the job market. That's a very uncomfortable conversation. But if you talk to any employer, they'll immediately tell you that." The real story is simpler than people think. Companies overspent when money was cheap, overhired during COVID, and now the skills coming out of universities don't match what the job market needs.

If the leadership in the AI movement doesn’t step up quickly, organize around the right “go to market” and create incentives to align everyone, this will be a generational fumble. It is, sadly, happening before our eyes.

@SethDillon @dbongino I think it’s pretty simple. Most people don’t want war. They want economic opportunity and a focus on domestic issues. They follow and listen to people who agree with that.

It’s true that bad people and their ideas are often very popular. But that’s all the more reason for them to be opposed, not praised. One of the biggest mistakes anyone can make is confusing popularity with virtue. Screwtape, of course, would see it differently.

Watching Utah become head and shoulders the most hateable fanbase in the conference over Central Florida in such a short time has been pretty remarkable. Truly an astounding effort to be so unanimously hated by everyone in the conference while accomplishing next to nothing since they joined the Big 12.
