Well, back in the day, we called those folks "acquaintances," but FaceBook never had an "acquaintance" button. In fact, my mom told me, and I quote: "Peter, you will have many acquaintances in your life, but very few friends. Those are the people you cherish." That's why I say social media ruined the word "friend."

Recent events in my life have, once again, driven home a point to me: Social media has ruined the word "friend." If you only hear from people when they need something from you, they are not really "friends." Your real "friends" will want you around for your company, and nothing more. Be a real friend. Reach out for no other reason than to say "hi," and catch up. I admit, I am not very good at it; I always feel like a bother, because growing up, I was made to feel that way by the people closest to me. It's something I need to work on.
