@moseskagan @Jimmydahitman60 Can’t speak to SF specifics, but everything else tracks. There’s also a significant difference in friction, and therefore cost, between parties operating under these rules in good faith vs parties looking to extract maximum toll.

@moseskagan @davidsenra LKY said in 2011, when Xi Jinping had been mooted as the next Chinese leader, that Xi was different than recent Chinese leaders. “He has iron in his soul.” He also predicted that Xi would lean hard on nationalism. LKY was still on top of his game at 88.

@BenjamenH @amandaorson @drgurner I haven’t seen Shrinking yet, but Severance and Silo are fantastic. My Apple TV subscription has been good for nudging me into new content. With Netflix and Prime I’m always tempted to rewatch something I’ve seen before.

@amandaorson From my experience Apple is putting out the highest quality programming right now. Would love to hear @drgurner’s take on Shrinking (we love it) and Severance. Between that and F1, I think it’s easily worth the expense.

Was once in the liquor store across from our old office, when the Korean owner noticed some teens stealing. Before I could really process what was going on, he: 1. Pushed a button that dropped a steel mesh down over the glass front doors (trapping the thieves inside w us) 2. Grabbed a metal bar, and 3. Hopped the counter to rush the thieves Their loot was on the ground and their hands in the air about a second later. He let them leave, chastened. Guessing they've never been back.

Every fast food chain tried to have AI operate the drive-thru window. They all sucked, then this guy broke the Taco Bell drive-thru AI by ordering 18,000 cups of water and now the chains will only let AI talk to the employess.

Burger King is launching this AI chatbot called “Patty” that talks to employees through the headset. The AI clarifies what to cook and reminds the employee to say “Welcome to Butger King”, “please” and “thank you” to customers during interaction points.

@Nowooski It's not my experience that Whole Foods is anywhere close to being cheaper than Kroger. But keep in mind, this is for the SF market, where Kroger has no presence. It would be fun to see where Aldi falls on this, they are one of the fastest growing grocers in the US.

Shintaro Orihara, trackside general manager for @HondaRacingF1 has a plan “We haven’t yet run with the kind of (aggressive) cooling specification that would allow us to judge whether cooling is still too strict or not.” Just like last year, it’s completely normal to change the cooling specification (the number of heat-exhaust louvers) depending on the conditions of that particular day and time. They also carried out comparison tests for that in Bahrain. On top of that, right now the priority is simply running normally, so they are “currently running with a number of louvers that leaves plenty of margin.” They plan to test next week how high the temperatures will rise when using the more aggressive cooling specification. @georgymh @moseskagan 💯 on the humility. There’s no shortage of 22 y/o grads who have done case study competitions and come into interviews v well prepared: “I’ve done my research. All you have to do is increase your sales unit volume and widen your margins!” No shit Sherlock.

As a young person interviewing for an early-career position, the correct signal to send is: I’ve read as much as I could find about this business, but I’m aware I don’t really know anything yet. That said, I’m hungry, I learn fast and I’ll run through walls for the team.

Joe and Tracy are so good at this. I had a great time on oddlots. We discussed: - Bourdain wasn’t a good chef - why hand jobs are essential to restaurant lighting - why you shouldn’t open a restaurant ever - and the serious stuff of supply chains labors markets etc
Joe Weisenthal@TheStalwart

Restaurant episodes are some of my favorites. Really enjoyed talking to @whiteguyfieri about everything from the labor market for dishwashers, the farm-to-table supply chain, beef tallow pricing, and optimal dining room lighting.

@moseskagan @patitsas I worked at a company that did this. Lots of rolled eyes. One recited value was “I will respect others by being on time.” 2-day training with a consultant: “I thought the recital thing was corny, but I’ve never done a training where everyone was on time every time.” It sinks in.

A speech I give to every new employee, either immediately before or immediately after we hire them: 1. Our business, and therefore your job, exists bc rich people trust us with their money and/or their buildings 2. They are adults and will understand if we make mistakes (provided they are not repeated too often) 3. What they will certainly not forgive is being lied to, either directly or by omission 4. Furthermore, we can fix ~any mistake *so long as we know about it* 5. Therefore, if you make a mistake or see any of us making a mistake, we beg you to tell us, so we can tell them and then fix it 6. Don't worry about being yelled at. We don't do that here, and, anyway, there is no conceivable way any mistake you could make in this job would hold a candle to the mistakes (generally, of omission) I have personally made (and, probably, unfortunately, continue to make) 7. My literal door is usually open; my metaphorical door is always open. If you see something wrong, pls, again, I beg you, come tell me! (And then I repeat some or all of this during company meetings throughout the year, to try to make sure it sinks into the culture.)

@resetbasis @jsynergy This is the best paying gig he’s going to ever have, and he’s going to hold on to it as long as he can. He doesn’t care about the next guy, the blue collar workers of the future, or the transit riders. His base is the union members within 10 years of retirement.

It's fun to imagine this guy is an idiot, but that's not the case. You don't make it to the top of any union unless you're sharp. He knows you don't need two people running a train, just as the teamsters know you don't need a guy riding shotgun in an autonomous truck. Same shit happened last year with the longshormen. Today's unions aren't fighting for healthcare, humane job conditions, or decent pay; that battle has been won, and unions deserve credit for that. Today's unions are special-interest groups running a jobs program. So, the leaders of these unions face an impossible choice. Pander to their constituents, or do what's best for the union long-term. If their pitch was "we understand technology advances over time, but some of this progress means certain jobs are no longer necessary. We'd like to see these advancements phased in to allow us time to retrain our members for different jobs." You'd see a ton of people on the left and the right getting behind them. No one is rooting for job loss, and a plan to embrace technology while supporting workers would be great. You'd see union membership grow for the first time in decades, and public opinion would shift favorably. But most current union members hate that pitch. If you ask them to choose between doing a useless job and getting paid, or learning a new job and getting paid, most chose the former and expect the leader of their union to fight for that. If union presidents want to keep getting elected (they do), they have to fight for what current members want, even if they know it's harmful to the union's overall interests in the future. They can tell their members, "I'm a bulldog, I fought like hell for you, we just got steamrolled." It's a group of people consistently stepping over quarters to pick up nickels.

Your hubris is astounding . The 2-worker train crews will never be gone . Hochul sided with out of town classists like you , not blue collar NYC , and that’s unfortunate, but it’s inconsequential because neither you nor your arrogant wonky ilk , nor the governor herself , will defeat the @transportworker . Good luck with the fight you jackass . Our contract expires in 5 months . You’ll be pissing and moaning again when the dust clears you pathetic loser .

Another thought: Given the opportunity, maybe best to build your own org or else join a small, mission-focused one in a role where your work contributes directly to the org achieving its mission. You forgo the safety / stability of a larger org, but also avoid the risk that you fall victim to politics.

Three thoughts after reading this excellent / horrifying article: 1. Bc I was building my career totally outside large institutions, I really had no idea of the scale of the change that was occurring, and therefore I underestimated how profoundly my peers' lives were being shaped by these forces; 2. As a father, the idea that my sons' opportunities might be arbitrarily limited by their sex or skin color is infuriating; and 3. This extends to everyone else's kids, too. The only way forward in a multi-ethnic society is for everyone to be judged according to his/her individual merits.
