NEW: Delighted to join @WillNorman and @RokhsanaFiaz to launch the Westfield Avenue cycle lane, with climate-resilient features funded by £273,000 from City Hall. This is a great example of how step-by-step, we’re building a fairer, greener London for everyone 🌍💚

@hackneycouncil @SarahWoodberryD It shouldn't have fallen to a local campaigning group to produce a genuinely viable design that facilitates safe, all ability cycling. If the council wasn't trying to get in touch with experienced consultants who know how to do this, it's because they weren't interested.

@hackneycouncil @SarahWoodberryD Council told us previously the reason they dismissed designs with cycle lanes was because they failed modelling. Which makes more sense than the reasoning Sarah is now giving. Because why comission a design with cycle lanes, only to reject it because it has cycle lanes?

👀 REVEALED: new designs show how we are transforming the dangerous Pembury Circus junction and creating a new linear park along Amhurst Road in Hackney Central.💡 Hear from Cllr @SarahWoodberryD about how this is part of our plan for a greener, safer Hackney Central ⬇️ 🧵

@JamesNonchalant @London_Cycling @hackneycouncil @hackney_cycling The irony being that the council's preferred design for the junction will encourage the "wrong kind of cycling", when segregated tracks would make movements more predictable. Banned turns plus massive pavements are going to be an interesting combination.

1: it's mystifying why @hackneycouncil is still doubling down on a design that fails danger reduction badly at Pembury Circus; 2: see thread for WHY; 3: HT our fantastic local groups! Great campaign from @hackney_cycling , and they're not alone in their skills & determination.

Hackney’s decision to progress with a substandard design for Pembury Junction is deeply disappointing. It also exposes a lot of Hackney’s disjointed and confused thinking and policy making. This thread is important for your transport remit @SarahWoodberryD. 👇 🧵

Surely this is exactly the kind of case where @willnorman and officers in @TfL should intervene with meetings with @hackneycouncil officers and Cllrs.? If necessary with the experts at @activetraveleng ?

@PemburyFiveWays @hackneycouncil All we were asking was for both plans to be reviewed by Active Travel England, which would've had a quick turnaround, and then to act on that advice. I suppose we shouldn't be surprised that the party in power voted against scrutinising its own plans though!

@PemburyFiveWays @hackneycouncil It would've been worth spending a little longer if it meant getting the final design right. £20m of funding won't come around again soon, new design will probably be in place for half a century before another rethink is possible.

Update on @HackneyCouncil 3hr scrutiny review of Pembury Circus junction improvements: an almost unanimous decision in favour of the council’s plans, only 1 vote in favour of the #HackneyCycling Campaign challenge. Hopefully no further delays & construction will start in spring

OK here we go! It's the call in meeting for the Pembury Junction decision. We are going to try and live tweet as we go tonight. This is a meeting to see if the scrutiny committee agree with us that the junction design has not been completed correctly

.@ZoeGarbett, leader of hackneygreens want to see chaos at Pembury junction with cyclists routed through the pavements to mix with the pedestrians, children and any number of vulnerable people using the footways and crossings!

❌️ council design ✅️ alternative, vision zero design! I've led call in (as cllr) of this decision as the design put forward by the council is not vision zero compliant. Widley agreed that Pembury Circus needs improving but the council design is not good enough 1/3

@VincentStops @hackneygreens This is also the version that is in the calling in document. As you can see, it restores a pedestrian crossing over Amhurst Road (on western arm of jct) removed in the council's design (which would lead to people crossing on their desire line with no protection).

@VincentStops @hackneygreens Because there's been so little transparency throughout the process from the council, we've had to react to such changes in roughly real time. Newest version of HCC's preferred design was up on the blogpost as of yesterday, I'll include it below for convenience:

As a councillor I represented Hackney Central for 20 years. I know residents would be horrified that the mature plane trees at Pembury junction have to be removed to make way for the @hackneygreens plans for the junction.

Downham Road: another Hackney failure Unbelievably @hackneycouncil's decision report failed to include HCC's official response: "We maintain... that a scheme on Downham Road that does not provide a safe cycle route will not contribute to model shift... @SarahWoodberryD 1/

@Paraqin @Hackneycyclist Yes that's right. Downham Road will continue to have no restrictions on traffic, as is currently the case, once this scheme is put in. There will actually be an increase in heavy traffic (e.g. tipper / concrete trucks) as several big housing projects are planned in the area.

@mvbooks2 @Hackneycyclist @hackneycouncil Not just one scheme, the plans for Pembury Circus are also awful. They haven't implemented any new LTNs in over two years. School streets are great, but a strategy for secondary school students is also needed. They are more likely to need to use main roads that can't be closed.

@mvbooks2 @Hackneycyclist @hackneycouncil Yes I expect they wouldn't recognise themselves as anti cyclist, but that will be the end result of this scheme all the same. Parents and children cycling to either of the two schools here will either need to do so in front of HGVs, or on the pavement.

@Hackneycyclist The last thing I would accuse @hackneycouncil of being anti cyclist. Not sure about the curret cabinet but I know previous abinets have been majority cyclist. I suspect that this scheme is for the benfit of other road users.
