@DahlaKib Eritrea’s refusal to submit to global financial and military machinery is a powerful statement of true independence. While being excluded from SWIFT and facing heavy sanctions causes real damage and disruption, it is a price paid for a principled anchor of sovereignty.

#Opinion: #Red_Sea or Strait of #Hormuz: Flashpoint for next great power confrontation addisstandard.com/?p=56497 The global focus on the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz risks overlooking a critical reality: “the Horn of #Africa is a more likely starting point for the next major geopolitical crisis,” argues Gebremichael Negash. He notes that #Ethiopia sits at the center of this emerging dynamic, increasingly framing its landlocked position as a “strategic vulnerability,” which is reshaping regional alignments. This shift is reflected in the 2024 memorandum of understanding (MoU) with #Somaliland, a development that has unsettled #Somalia and raised concerns among regional actors. These tensions are further complicated by competing interests involving #Egypt, #Turkey, and Gulf states, effectively turning the Horn of Africa into a potential arena for proxy competition. At the same time, the unresolved aftermath of the war in #Tigray, despite the #Pretoria Agreement, continues to sustain underlying instability. #Eritrea’s role in particular has heightened fears of renewed conflict, with potential spillover effects that could disrupt critical Red Sea shipping routes and broader global trade flows. The author cautions that “without a coordinated African-led framework, the Red Sea’s future risks being shaped by external powers.”

@AlulaFre Yes our history is complex. Never before have we been silenced and cowed as we are now at the hand of our home grown leaders. Eritrea is wounded and betrayed because the liberators are the destroyers.

Eritrea is a nation of six million living beside a regional giant of over 110 million a neighbor with whom it fought a devastating border war and endured a decades‑long “no war, no peace” siege. In such a landscape, extended National Service emerged as a survival mechanism, not a system of ownership. It is a response to existential threats, not an ideology of domination. #HornOfAfrica #SecurityContext #Sovereignty What Western narratives consistently omit is the progress made by those who stayed to build. Over three decades, Eritrea expanded rural education, strengthened healthcare, and reduced infant and maternal mortality achievements acknowledged even by international agencies. These gains were made under sanctions, isolation, and relentless external pressure. #Development #PublicHealth #Resilience The digital world rarely rewards complexity. It rewards virality. And in that economy, Eritrea becomes a caricature a place spoken about but rarely spoken with. My son deserved better than that. Our children deserve better than that. #DigitalLiteracy #AfricaNarratives #RespectSovereignty Human rights should never be a weapon used to brand entire nations. They should be a framework for truth, accountability, and dignity not a tool for geopolitical pressure or algorithmic sensationalism. #HumanRights #GlobalSouth #FairNarratives For every Eritrean parent raising children in the diaspora, the struggle is not only to preserve memory but to defend it from distortion. Our stories must be told by those who lived them, not by those who profit from misrepresenting them. #DiasporaParents #Memory #Identity If you want to understand Eritrea, listen to Eritreans not to the digital echo chambers built on selective testimony and recycled talking points. Our history is complex, our people are resilient, and our sovereignty is not up for rebranding. #EritreaSpeaks #AfricanAgency #TruthMatters

Human Rights as a Weapon: A Father’s Response to the Digital Branding of Eritrea April 26, 2026 By Sammy G. @RedSeaBeacon The conversation that shattered my peace began in the most mundane of ways: my son, looking up from his phone, asked a question that felt like a physical blow. “Dad, is Eritrea a slave state?” He had seen a viral TikTok clip citing the Global Slavery Index, then verified it with a quick search, only to find the same dehumanizing second-place ranking repeated across the digital landscape. In that moment, I saw a cloud of confusion and concern pass over his face. It was a look that contradicted every story of resilience, every immersive journey across our ancestral lands, and every ounce of pride I had spent a lifetime instilling in him. As a father, I realized that the “data” my son found online wasn’t just information; it was a weaponized narrative designed to erase his heritage. This “slavery” label, frequently regurgitated by organizations like Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International, is a masterclass in what scholars call “epistemic violence.” These reports suffer from a fatal methodological flaw: selection bias. By relying almost exclusively on the testimony of asylum seekers in overseas camps individuals whose legal status often depends on portraying their homeland in the most dire light these organizations create a distorted image. This isn’t objective research; it is a feedback loop that rewards the most extreme narratives while silencing the sovereign reality of the millions of Eritreans who live, work, and build their lives within the country. The crux of the “slavery” accusation rests on Eritrea’s National Service. To an outsider operating on a Western individualistic template, any form of mandatory service looks like coercion. However, labeling this as “slavery” is a rhetorical distortion that trivializes the historically specific reality of actual chattel slavery. To understand Eritrea, one must understand its geography and history. Eritrea is an oasis of harmony and stability surrounded by a sea of volatility. We are a nation of roughly six million people situated next to a regional giant of over 110 million, against which we fought a devastating border war and faced a prolonged “no war, no peace” stalemate. In this context, the extension of National Service was shaped by persistent existential threats and the open-ended militarization of the region. It functions not as an instrument of “ownership” over citizens, but as a collective survival mechanism designed to preserve sovereignty in a neighborhood of civil wars, extremism, and ethnic upheaval. What is systematically omitted from the Western narrative is the tangible progress made by those who stayed to build the nation. Over the past three decades, Eritrea has made significant strides in human development. Access to education has reached previously underserved rural communities, and healthcare infrastructure has steadily improved. We have seen notable reductions in infant and maternal mortality rates achievements recognized even by international agencies all achieved under conditions of sanctions and sustained external pressure. Is Fear The Driving Force? 🇪🇷 Eritrea’s Shifting Stance Toward the USA and the West⁉️ Eritrea’s long-standing anti-Western foreign policy under President Isaias Afwerki, marked by defiance of the United States, sanctions, and alliances with Russia and China, is undergoing a dramatic reversal. In late 2025 and early 2026, the Trump administration has pursued direct engagement, with envoy meetings in Cairo discussing sanctions relief and normalized ties. Isaias Afwerki has responded with openness to “constructive engagement.” What appears to be driving this shift is not strategic pragmatism alone, but a deep fear gripping Isaias Afwerki: the threat posed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s ambitions for Red Sea access. Isaias Afwerki, long seen as “unshakable”, now seems rattled enough by PM Dr. Abiy’s aggressive posturing—repeated demands for ports like Assab, Ethiopian military advances near the border, and lingering tensions from the Tigray conflict—that he is willing to pivot sharply toward the US and the West. This fear for regime survival and control of Eritrea’s coastline has pushed Isaias to court USA as a protective shield, effectively preparing to trade long-held principles of sovereignty for American backing to safeguard his throne against a perceived existential Ethiopian threat. The situation echoes Somalia’s desperate turn to Turkey amid Ethiopian pressures, but in Eritrea’s case, the panic appears even more acute. Isaias is ready to “sell” access and alignment to the United States in exchange for diplomatic cover, sanctions relief, and a counterweight to PM Abiy, prioritizing personal and regime preservation over Eritrea’s traditional independence narrative. This marks a striking departure for a leader who built his image on resisting Western influence. While broader US interests in Red Sea security play a role, the dominant force seems to be Isaias Afwerki’s fear that PM Abiy Ahmed could upend his rule. Whether this frantic outreach will succeed in stabilizing his position or further erode Eritrea’s autonomy remains to be seen in the fast-shifting Horn of Africa landscape.

Tigray Authorities Move to Reinstate Pre-war Regional Council ETHIOPIA — ⚠️ The Central Committee of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) says it has decided to reinstate the region’s pre-2020 war Regional Council following a five-day regular meeting. In a statement, the TPLF said the council, which had previously been suspended in an effort to give the Pretoria Agreement a chance, would resume its authority. The TPLF accused #Ethiopia’s federal government of failing to implement the Agreement in good faith. Instead of fully implementing the Agreement, it claims the government used it as leverage by revoking the TPLF’s legal party status and supporting the creation of parallel political and military structures, among other obstacles. The statement also pointed to PM Abiy Ahmed’s «unilateral» extension of Tigray Interim Administration (TIRA) president’s mandate by one year as a turning point. According to the statement, this decision was made without consultation, undermining the TPLF’s role as a party to the Agreement. It appears that the interim administration led by Lt Gen Tadesse Werede may cease to function, and that governance may revert to the reinstated council. The federal government has not yet publicly responded to the decision. The Pretoria Agreement, signed in 2022, was intended to end two years of conflict in northern Ethiopia. Whether this latest move prevents further conflict or pushes tensions higher remains uncertain. What is clear is that the fragile peace established under Pretoria is now under serious strain.

With all due respect to the Office of the President, this post contains several claims that are factually inaccurate and theologically misguided, and as a Catholic I feel compelled to respond. 1. The Pope was not elected to please any president. Pope Leo XIV was elected by 133 cardinals from across the world in a sacred conclave, on the fourth ballot, on May 8, 2025. The Holy Spirit guides the conclave, not American politics. To suggest that “if I wasn’t in the White House, Leo wouldn’t be in the Vatican” is not only historically ignorant but theologically offensive to every Catholic on earth. 2. He was not an unknown outsider. Pope Leo XIV served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under Pope Francis, one of the most powerful roles in the Vatican, responsible for selecting bishops for dioceses worldwide. He was one of the most qualified candidates in the College of Cardinals. 3. He is deeply rooted in service, not politics. An Augustinian missionary who worked for decades in Peru, Pope Leo XIV dedicated his life to the poor and the Gospel long before any political figure noticed him. His name honors Leo XIII, the Pope who championed workers’ rights and the poor during the Industrial Revolution, a tradition of Catholic Social Teaching that predates any modern political party. 4. The Pope’s role is prophetic, not partisan. When the Pope speaks on peace, nuclear weapons, immigration, or the dignity of nations, he is fulfilling the mission of Christ, not opposing any government. His first words as Pope were “Peace be with you all,” echoing the Risen Christ (John 20:19). A Pope who is silent on injustice would be failing his divine mandate. 5. Demanding a Pope “get in line” with a president contradicts 2,000 years of Church history. From St. Peter before Nero, to St. Thomas More before Henry VIII, to John Paul II before Soviet communism, the Church has never existed to validate earthly power. “We must obey God rather than men.” (Acts 5:29) As Catholics, we pray for all leaders, including President Trump. But we stand firmly with our Holy Father. Habemus Papam. And he answers to God alone.

The Sunday Eucharist is indispensable to the Christian life. It is there that our faith is grows and strengthens. It is there that our efforts, though limited, are united by God’s grace to the actions of the members of a single body — the Body of Christ — for the accomplishment of a single great plan of salvation that embraces all humanity.

When Eritrea defeated Eswatini 2–1 on 31 March 2026, securing a 4–1 aggregate victory and a place in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group stages for the first time in 19 years, it should have been a moment of national celebration. Instead, Seven of the ten locally-based players in the 24-man squad never made it home. They are believed to have slipped away when the national team passed through South Africa, en route back to Eritrea via Egypt. Among those who absconded are goalkeeper Kubrom Solomon and experienced winger Medhanie Redie. Of all the Eritrea-based players in the squad, only three returned to Asmara. In 2019, seven players from the Eritrean under-20 team went missing after a regional tournament in Uganda. In 2015, ten senior players refused to return following a World Cup qualifier in Botswana. Earlier incidents include fifteen players and a team doctor being granted asylum in Uganda in 2013, and in 2009, nearly the entire senior squad failed to return from a trip to Kenya. Six players also fled during a tour to Angola as far back as 2007. Eritrea has been ruled by a single man since gaining independence from Ethiopia in 1993. President Isaias Afwerki has governed with an iron fist, with no general election ever having taken place. His rule has been defined by indefinite mandatory national service, suffocating media control, and an economy kept on a tight leash by the state. State media, which would ordinarily greet a historic qualification with fanfare and triumphalism, fell conspicuously silent. Planned celebrations in Asmara were cancelled once news of the absconding players emerged

#Ethiopia Abiye Ahmed, in an interview in Tigrinya language spoke to #Eritrea in a difficult language yesterday "It is strange that the people do not believe in progress. They do not believe in accountability - even their children " "When they took office, there were 300 factories. Today, Eritrea has no factories. At that time, there was the University of Asmara. Today, it is closed. The whole country has no universities." "We tried to get close to them and work with them. If you ask me, what did you learn from that time? I do not know what to tell you." "If they get power, they will not hesitate to destroy the country. Since we know their behavior, it will not be possible. And if they try, I think it will be their last attempt." This is what Abiye Ahmed said, in a long interview in the Tigrigna language
