Fun with Consensus at South Bay Systems meetup with real human participant nodes 😃😃 . @ssougou
Qian Li@qianl_cs

Our next South Bay Systems meetup will be on March 31. We've got two awesome deep-dive talks: - @ssougou will present deconstructing consensus and its application to Multigres - @stuhood will talk about how modern full-text search is evolving toward columnar systems (and the tricky optimization challenges) Food and beverages will be provided, courtesy of our hosts, @Snowflake Come hang out with the systems crowd 👇

My favorite pastime nowadays… Talking to Gemini live about database internals..As it can pull up open source repos and go through specific files making it even more satisfying!

🚀Multi-Region strong consistency (MRSC) for Amazon DynamoDB global tables is now generally available. You can use MRSC to build multi-Region applications with a Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of zero, achieving the highest level of resilience. Learn more👉go.aws/4ksdEs8

This is so stupid I shouldn’t even be tweeting it. In my role I context switch so many times during the week that a simple task can take days to weeks to get done. It also means I need to ramp back up on what I’ve done so far all over again. To combat this I start a doc and I document what I’ve done so far in realtime. Example: I went to the UI and here’s a screenshot of what options I picked, here’s a link to the feature flag I changed, here are the Kafka messages that were generated, here is the link to the logs, here’s a slack link to the question I asked the integration team. Inevitably when my manager decides something needs to happen sooner, or I ask if someone wants to take my task, or I just come back to it days later… boom here’s a doc outlining exactly where I am. I just read through the doc and it takes less time than redoing everything all over again. I have 4-5 of these docs during the week because I don’t work on just one thing at a time.

Is anyone doing weekly content as diverse and consistent as TGIK (thank goodness it’s Kubernetes) in the data processing or ml/ai space? Not looking for surface level stuff.

I'm teaching a new course! AI Python for Beginners is a series of four short courses that teach anyone to code, regardless of current technical skill. We are offering these courses free for a limited time. Generative AI is transforming coding. This course teaches coding in a way that’s aligned with where the field is going, rather than where it has been: (1) AI as a Coding Companion. Experienced coders are using AI to help write snippets of code, debug code, and the like. We embrace this approach and describe best-practices for coding with a chatbot. Throughout the course, you'll have access to an AI chatbot that will be your own coding companion that can assist you every step of the way as you code. (2) Learning by Building AI Applications. You'll write code that interacts with large language models to quickly create fun applications to customize poems, write recipes, and manage a to-do list. This hands-on approach helps you see how writing code that calls on powerful AI models will make you more effective in your work and personal projects. With this approach, beginning programmers can learn to do useful things with code far faster than they could have even a year ago. Knowing a little bit of coding is increasingly helping people in job roles other than software engineers. For example, I've seen a marketing professional write code to download web pages and use generative AI to derive insights; a reporter write code to flag important stories; and an investor automate the initial drafts of contracts. With this course you’ll be equipped to automate repetitive tasks, analyze data more efficiently, and leverage AI to enhance your productivity. If you are already an experienced developer, please help me spread the word and encourage your non-developer friends to learn a little bit of coding. I hope you'll check out the first two short courses here! deeplearning.ai/short-courses/…

Every year, a lottery determines who gets an H-1B visa to work in the US. The game, it turns out, is rigged. Outsourcing and staffing firms are exploiting loopholes, crowding out US employers and immigrants who play it fair. We have exclusive data to show it for the 1st time 🧵

As a library author, consider every config option you add a small defeat. Each new knob, each setting makes your lib a little bit harder to use. Be very careful with how you spend the complexity budget you have, and fight back as much as you can.
