Let’s see how this plays out. But fearing is unavoidable.

@SamRosmarin @solassefa Ethiopia is currently introducing multiple policies simultaneously, and no one knows for sure how all these policies will unfold. I think people are underestimating the impact of the NBE shifting to an interest based monetary policy,

@SamRosmarin @SamRosmarin & @solassefa I don’t see any alternatives other than devaluing the currency and observing the outcomes. For a comparison between Nigeria and Kenya, I’m not sure if Ethiopia’s devaluation will play out exactly like Nigeria’s and Kenya’s

@AyeleGelan @solassefa @the But it’s the fault of the banks if they decide to sell shares only to their own of corrupt, greedy, ethnic or religious aligned circle of friends. Even privates are nothing but a political circus with no financial practice. At least with the entry of foreign they will be ashes.

@solassefa @the Private banks are constrained to lend to only a few who can fulfil collateral conditions. You can't use any rural property as collateral but you are fine with urban property. This way propertyless urban residents and rural farmers are excluded. It is not the fault of the banks.

This is an excellent policy, perhaps the most sensible way foreign banks can enter Ethiopia's banking sector. Meanwhile glad to know that #NBE's proposal for "merger" of local banks will logically become redundant. thereporterethiopia.com/26647/ via @The Reporter Ethiopia

@AyeleGelan Sometimes to be innovative in Economics doesn't require to be a rocket scientist. But God forbidden we have to copy and paste of follow the orthodoxy/institutions. No question asked.

"Taming the Beast: Accepting the Parallel Market and Adopting a Dual Exchange Rate" I wrote this a couple of years ago, proposing a dual exchange rate to effectively wipe out parallel market and move remittances entirely to official channels or banks. dinagddee.com/2019/06/05/tam…
AyeleGelan@AyeleGelan

It has been a while since I began urging the #Ethiopian govt to apply this kind of #innovative policies. #Argentina did it to promote soy export. #Ethiopia can utilize the same trick to induce #remittance inflows & wipe out black markets. bloomberg.com/news/articles/… via @markets

This industrial park project in Addis Ababa is a good one, and will hopefully help small and medium enterprises to grow while being close to the market. Let’s hope to see more micro industrial parks in various cities and towns.

Perhaps this is an example of concrete step and one to be included in the action plan of the new #US strategy to #Africa. Energy is the stepping stone for industrialisation, create jobs and opportunities for companies.
Zemedeneh Negatu@Zemedeneh

One reason industrialization hasn’t taken-off in Africa is unavailability & un-affordability of electricity. So, it’s great news for Africa that the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, continent’s biggest, started generating 375MW from the 2nd of 13 turbines. Well done! #Ethiopia

@alemayehuGeda At the cost of many who their real wage is deeping further or have no wage at all. The govt shows off how the economy is growing displaying the ‘fancy’ things that their well connected business people use. Ironically, liberalisation was meant for the few not to have competition.

@alemayehuGeda I think we are far off from all these to happen m. The politicians are bent on promoting consumerism rather than production. Let’s look how many groceries, food chains and entertainments are opened to satisfy the small elites that have surged and massively benefit from inflation.

@AyeleGelan I wish they once lived in East Asian countries to understand productivity, investments and keeping the economy under effective control with policies. African governments are immune from real developments happening in Asia.

Galloping inflation happens in Africa NOT b/c money is printed BUT b/c the printed money has not been used to finance productive investment, create jobs & then lead to production of merchandize that would appear on supermarket shelves! Vital to recognize these linkages. 3/...
AyeleGelan@AyeleGelan

There is utter confusion Africa in distinguishing between MPs function as control of inflation & control of recession. Africa has been in perennial recession (high unemp, low capacity utilization, etc). Still Africa obsesses with using MP to control inflation. 2/...

@AyeleGelan I always consider this stories with a big IF too. What matters is what happens on the ground not the foreign reports. We don’t need to be cynic but we have to see the reality as it is.

Increase in wheat supply should reduce price in the domestic market. Have we seen such a price effect? There is a precedence to this matter (pre-2018): EU was puzzled same way, sponsored IFPRI to seek answer. Findings: inflated yield across cereal in official data, by upto 44%.
