Igor Sikorsky took the controls of his VS-300 and performed the first successful free flight of a helicopter that actually worked the way we know them today! 🏗️💨 🛠️ Why May 13th is Iconic Before this day, vertical flight was a messy puzzle. Many tried, but most failed. Sikorsky’s genius was the single main rotor and tail rotor design. The Problem: Torque. Without a tail rotor, the helicopter body would spin uncontrollably in the opposite direction of the blades. The Solution: That tiny rotor on the tail counteracts the spin, giving the pilot complete control.
