There is nothing like the natural beauty of our coasts! We must protect this view from dangerous and unreliable offshore wind farms.

The commercial fishing fleet is strong because of people like NEFSA board member John Borden. Borden grew up in Portsmouth, NH, where he spent his summers lobstering. We're grateful for his continued support! “The fishing industry has been good to me, and it has treated me quite well. I have been blessed to make a living from the sea and want to be a part of preserving this opportunity for generations to come.”

At NEFSA’s 3rd Annual Meeting in Rockland a few weeks ago, we were proud to honor Tessa Browne of Cape Ann Lobstermen / The Lobster of Gloucester as the recipient of this year’s Glen Libby Stewardship Award. Tessa is a tireless advocate for the fishing community, fighting every day to protect fishermen and the way of life that sustains so many coastal communities.

19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

Wind turbines undermine American energy, are unreliable, and harm the environment. @POTUS is exactly right: we cannot afford to build any more turbines.

NEFSA is heading to the Seafood Expo this weekend! 🦐🌊 We’re excited to join industry leaders, partners, and innovators to talk all things seafood—from sustainability and safety to the future of the industry. Events like this are a great opportunity to connect, learn, and collaborate with the people shaping the industry today. See you there!

Without the hard work of commercial fishermen, Americans wouldn’t have heart-healthy, fresh seafood. Show your support for them this weekend and shop local!

@profstonge If a man exposed himself to a 13 year-old girl in any other setting, one would assume he would be arrested for indecent exposure, sexual assault, or a plethora of other crimes. Judge VanDyke is correct in his dissent, and the other judges have lost their minds.

Across New England, commercial fishermen are proving they are the ocean’s true conservationists. V-notching is one of the vital practices that helps keep the resource healthy and strong. NEFSA Director of Advocacy Jason Joyce shares more. 👇

@Geiger_Capital For whatever reason, this is what people actually want. They don't admit it- even to themselves, but ignoring the reality that comes with what they support is making this happen.

Imagine fighting for our country and then in your old age a 30-year-old illegal immigrant from Honduras pushes you onto the subway tracks and kills you… We don’t have to live like this. Mass deportations. Now.

While many people believe ropeless fishing gear is safe, NEFSA Director of Advocacy Jason Joyce explains that it is unreliable and puts fishermen in harm’s way. “It is expensive, it is unreliable, and the biggest thing now is just that it’s dangerous.”

Some argue that ropeless fishing gear is a good idea, yet they fail to realize how dangerous this type of gear is for fishermen. If a fisherman tragically falls overboard, having a vertical line to pull him back is lifesaving. We must prioritize fishermen’s safety!

Some NIMBYs are advocating to push offshore wind development farther out to sea to protect their beach views. They claim this would be better for fishermen and whales—but that argument is both false and laughable. Whales don’t swim in neatly defined corridors. As our good friends at @CapeMayWhale often point out, “whales have tails, and they follow the bunker wherever they go.” Just as @NOAA and @BOEM relied on outdated models of whale activity when siting and granting leases to the offshore wind industry, some now suggest that whales—especially the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale—would swim in a narrow corridor closer to shore if the federal government simply designated that space off-limits to industry, fishing, shipping, and other activities. But these offshore sites have a much larger footprint. They require thousands of additional miles of cable to be plowed into the seabed, along with open-loop cooling systems that discharge 8.4 million gallons of water daily—each at 90°F and containing chlorine residuals. Fishermen are the ones who sustain local coastal communities and feed America. It’s not okay to push them aside. @Congressman_JVD @SaveJersey @fishstewardship @CaptMarciano

Today, we’re highlighting NEFSA business member Gus Lovgren! Gus is a 4th-generation commercial fisherman who operates the F/V Lilly Rose and advocates for fair business practices and sustainable fishing in Point Pleasant, New Jersey. “I’ve always been truly devoted to sustainable fishing practices, advocating for our industry on all fronts, from public relations to fair fishing practices.”
