On political endorsement wapo.st/3YmeD3T This is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. @realdonaldtrump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner @jeffbezos (and others). Disturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.

@PaulSweeney @adrianweckler splinternet a coming. I think I first wrote it was in the post in 2018 or so 🤔 There's very little alternative when it comes to such folk (i.e those too thick to know enough to know what they don't know (e.g. basic Western Democratic speech norms or laws, for example).

X’s Grok AI training has been stopped (for now) in Europe by the Irish data regulator in a court action. Elon Musk’s platform had forcibly opted EU citizens in to training Grok’s AI without asking. In court, X called the Irish action “draconian”. independent.ie/business/elon-…

What about synthetic data? There seems to be a misconception here — I don't think developers are using it to increase training data volume. This paper has a great list of uses for synthetic data for training, and it's all about fixing specific gaps and making domain-specific improvements like math, code, or low-resource languages: arxiv.org/html/2404.0750… It's unlikely that mindless generation of synthetic training data will have the same effect as having more high-quality human data.

In the late 1960s top airplane speeds were increasing dramatically. People assumed the trend would continue. Pan Am was pre-booking flights to the moon. But it turned out the trend was about to fall off a cliff. I think it's the same thing with AI scaling — it's going to run out; the question is when. I think more likely than not, it already has.

Indeed. But one day, in the near future, I believe @OpenAI et al will realise that they need at least some of those startups' features to continue to sell their products in a post, or at least drastically changed, safe harbour world.

It’s good to have a pluralistic press, but imo the lack of cohesion from large publishers desperate to strike AI content/tools deals will ultimately weaken the prospects for journalism - (just as similar deals with tech companies did not really help in the past)
Sara Fischer@sarafischer

Unlike music and book publishers, news outlets are struggling to present a unified front in their fight for copyright protection, and that could weaken their leverage in negotiations with Big Tech to license their content. axios.com/2024/05/03/new…

Today, we received the awaited decision on the US aid package that we long fought for. And a very significant one. Our warriors on the front lines, as well as our cities and villages suffering from Russian terror, will feel it. The U.S. House of Representatives voted on it today. I thank everyone who supported our package, this is a solution for protecting life. I personally thank Speaker Mike Johnson and all American hearts who believe, as we do in Ukraine, that Russian evil must not be winning. I am hopeful that the bill will be quite quickly passed by the United States Senate and sent to President Biden. We appreciate every sign of support for our country and its independence, people, and way of life, which Russia is attempting to bury under the rubble. America has demonstrated its leadership since the first days of this war. Exactly this type of leadership is required to maintain a rules-based international order and predictability for all nations. We will undoubtedly use American assistance to strengthen both of our nations and bring a just end to this war closer, the war that Putin must lose. I thank our entire Ukrainian team and everyone who works tirelessly to bring this outcome closer. I am grateful to all of our country's representatives, diplomats working to strengthen support for Ukraine, all civil society members, every volunteer who works for Ukraine, and all of Ukraine’s friends around the world. I thank my team. The world rallies behind Ukraine’s cause when Ukrainians rally behind independence.

@danobrien20 both. I was y/n until the last minute, when I went y/y out of sheer indulgence of government's incompetence & echo chambered perspective. I thought 'this is the least worst option, they'll tidy it up in due course'). But I'm not sorry to see the result. Wake up call, big time.

Nobody, to my knowledge, predicted these referendum results. For sure nobody predicted the outcome of the 2020 general election. Has the electorate become more volatile/unpredictable? Are politicians and analysts increasingly out of touch? Both?

it is interesting how AI erasing or negatively stereotyping people of color was dismissed as a minor/fixable bug or nonissue by some of the same folks who see AI erasing white men as somewhere between a crime against humanity and the downfall of civilization
Abeba Birhane@Abebab

imagine if we had a fraction of the current outrage around Google's Gemini "going woke" over the past years when generative AI consistently produced racist stereotypes (which most generative AI still does)
