Séjourné is a prime example of the thoroughly incompetent and weak men now governing Europe.
The guy never worked a day of his life in the real world and started his short career in 2017 as a political advisor to Macron, but somehow now finds himself in charge of "Prosperity and Industrial Strategy" for the entire EU.
This particular interview is so illustrative of his utterly confused and incoherent strategic thinking.
He describes showing up to negotiate for rare earths from a Brazilian mine, only to learn the Americans had arrived three days earlier, "put money on the table," and bought everything through 2030.
He describes Belgian company Solvay restarting rare earth refining in France - a European industrial success story - only for Washington to swoop in and secure all its output. A European company, in Europe!
In short, the Americans are running circles around him and, by his own telling, every concrete setback he's suffered came from Washington.
His strategic conclusion? We must "de-risk" from China and prepare for "a major conflict between China and the US."
You genuinely cannot parody this. Everything he describes points to an ongoing economic war between the US and Europe - Americans actively sabotaging European resource security and industrial ambitions. And his conclusion is "China bad."
The conflict is already here, Stéphane. You're in it. You're losing it. You can't even feel the American hand in your pocket because you've been trained to only look East.

Revealing interview with EU industry chief Séjourné by @rik_rutten on rare earths "Last month, I was supposed to go to Brazil to discuss a rare earth mine. 3 days beforehand we were told that the Americans had come, put money on the table, and bought all production until 2030"

→l.lefigaro.fr/MvCE

I never felt OK working in a company because people playing roles freaked me out. They gather in a meeting room and start playing roles: this one plays the boss, this one plays the excited mid-level manager, this one plays the HR.
Before the show starts, there's a ritual of unfunny jokes, after which all suddenly become serious and the show begins.
Only software engineers (except those who dream of becoming a software manager) can be normal people when at work. All the rest of them are like puppets with human bodies.

On the latest @SinicaPodcast, I host the authors of the controversial paper "What Does China Want?" in MIT's International Security. @daveckang, @ZenobiaChan, and @SiuHeiWong2 discuss their methodology and their findings — that China does not seek global hegemony. Link below.

@RnaudBertrand As much as i think the article's title is clickbait, the dude does look like he tried to transfer some data out.

The NY Post title 👇 vs What he actually did 👇
The "confidential research" that he "stole" was his own work on a potential breast cancer vaccine.
The real scandal here, besides the NY Post's insane sinophobic framing, is more how researchers have no rights to their own discoveries despite doing all the actual work and even when it could save lives globally.
