Don’t Enable Lawfare: Michigan Senate Bill 502 and House Bill 5830 are dangerous. As an attorney who has fought weaponized government and overreach, I am deeply concerned. These bills would make it easier to charge Michiganders with 20-year terrorism felonies based on subjective claims that someone “felt threatened” by their words - even if it’s protected speech under the First Amendment.
We’ve already seen this weaponized against conservatives. I strongly oppose giving elected prosecutors (both Republicans and Democrats) additional tools that can easily be abused to target and silence political opponents. If this becomes law, it will be abused - no doubt about it. Our laws today are strong enough to address objectively evident terroristic threats.
Shockingly, SB 502 passed the Senate unanimously with Republican support. Now the Republican sponsored HB 5830 is moving in the House under Judiciary Chair Sarah Lightner. This is not protecting public safety - it is open season on free speech and the constitutional rights of Michigan citizens.
I’m calling on House Republicans, especially Speaker Matt Hall and Chair Lightner, to immediately kill HB 5830. We must defend the First Amendment without apology. I thank Adam de Angeli and the entire team at @Rescue_Michigan for bringing this dangerous legislation to my attention.

And US law is very detailed about the requirements of Bureau of Prisons facilities, which would also rule out anything like the situations in El Salvador (some of these requirements date to a criminal justice reform law signed by President Trump)

In case you were wondering, the US code provides for incarceration by the Bureau of Prisons for anyone sentenced under federal law. And it needs to be as close as practicable to the prisoner's primary residence and within 500 miles of that residence (rules out El Salvador).
