We @a16z could not be more thrilled to lead @tryeasehealth's $41M Series A to redefine healthcare’s operating system, unifying intake (CRM), clinical (EHR), and billing (RCM) into a single, AI-native core platform. We’ve seen this operating system playbook succeed in other industries with companies like Toast and ServiceTitan. Healthcare – long burdened by fragmented, legacy software – is ready for the same shift. Ease is starting in behavioral health, and already supports hundreds of providers across inpatient, outpatient (IOP, PHP, MAT), and residential. The team made this decision easy. CEO @zachcohen25 has been a friend and colleague at a16z for years, and was someone I knew I’d be extremely lucky to back if ever given the opportunity. CTO @therealarrays is an incredible engineering leader with a track record of building and scaling elite technical teams. And President Steve Gold previously built and sold the behavioral health leader Refresh to Optum for one of the largest exits in the space. We’re proud to partner with Zach, Raymond, and Steve, and to invest alongside @AbstractVC, @BoxGroup, @seedtosunflower, and F3 Partners. Check it out: easehealth.com @EvaSteinman @illscience

Thrilled to back @EaseHealth’s Series A alongside @a16z + others. Healthcare software is fragmented and outdated. It doesn’t need another layer; it needs to be rebuilt for the AI era. Big believer in @zachcohen25 & @therealarrays as they build healthcare's AI-native backbone.

New paper! It’s now well known that Frontier AI models are still quite jagged, e.g. outperforming expert mathematicians while failing at seemingly easy visual puzzles. We argue that it’s worth better characterizing and measuring the jaggedness of new models.

The future of AI isn’t just enterprise tools. It’s seamless, invisible, and built into the little things people do every day.
TBPN@tbpn

Airbnb CEO @bchesky says more AI founders should be starting consumer businesses. "I'm on the board of Y Combinator. 87% of companies are enterprise companies per batch." "Enterprise is awesome... but the biggest prize is consumer. That is what's going to reach daily life for billions of people." "Think about all the little parts of daily life that are kind of annoying. Pay attention to whoever's in your life and ask: 'How could their daily life be a little bit easier?'"

2005: Accel is raising Fund IX- a significant reduction from $1.6B to $440 million. The dotcom bubble left scars everywhere. Social networking is dead. Friendster failed. Nobody wants to touch the category. Jim Breyer invests $12.7M into Facebook anyway in May 2005. VCs whisper it's embarrassing. "College kids will graduate and forget about it." 2011: Partial sales return the entire $440M fund. At IPO, the stake is worth billions. This is consumer investing. The category looks dead. The first movers crashed. Everyone moves on. Then the real winner shows up, and it's generational. The best investors back the 3rd, 5th, and 10th companies in a "doomed" space. They have conviction when everyone else has moved on. They understand consumer doesn't work until it suddenly does. Market timing is everything, except when it isn't.

Retail is coming back to San Francisco.    Ross just opened a second Market Street location—bringing jobs, foot traffic, and momentum downtown. This is the kind of investment our city needs, and it’s just the beginning.

Ross Dress for Less premiered its second Market Street store in downtown San Francisco this weekend, defying the wave of struggling Union Square retailers. sfchronicle.com/sf/article/ros…

Something’s in the air in San Francisco. I visited recently and felt a new energy pulsing through the city. It reminded me of tech’s heyday, with bustling streets, busy restaurants on every corner, and a lot of traffic. I had dinner with a few friends who live there (one of whom has been in SF for over 12 years), I got confirmation: the AI boom has COMPLETELY revived the city. OpenAI planting its flag in Silicon Valley has reignited the city, while competitors follow suit. Capital flows in VC have already surpassed past 2 years combined, just midway through the year. Obviously theres still seedy pockets and visible homelessness, but it’s noticeably improved since post-COVID, and I think the new mayor Daniel Lurie deserves credit for that. We toured some multifamily deals while in town and found units were getting pre-leased at asking rents without tenants, even stepping foot inside. I haven’t seen that kind of demand since the ZIRP era. From a development standpoint, new construction just doesn’t pencil right now. That’s true nationally, but in SF it’s even tougher, with union labor mandates, seismic requirements, and layers of local ordinances make it very hard to build. People love to write off California. But I don’t know… SF feels different right now. There’s something in the air, and for those willing to look past the headlines, I think there’s real opportunity.

Was in Portland this week, my first time in nearly a decade. (sorry, no pod this week) The last time I was here, I was an analyst underwriting prospective deals for @FARlikewhoa , modeling out what would eventually become Trion Properties, Inc. robust portfolio of over a thousand units in the Pac-Northwest. We ended up hitting a major milestone at the time, as the most active buyer in the mid market space. Today, Portland may not get the same buzz as markets like Phoenix, Austin, or Miami. Some still see it through the lens of “political risk,” rent control hurdles, or assume there’s no real growth story on the demand side. Others are still spooked by the post-COVID headline risk. But under the surface, the fundamentals are really compelling: Urban: You can buy WELL BELOW replacement cost. And not the 20-30% below you typically see, but in the urban core it’s more like 50%+. There’s still some supply to absorb and operational challenges in urban core, but streets are cleaner, less tents, and things seem to be turning around for the better. Suburbs: the burbs meanwhile, continue to deliver steady, reliable cash flow. Delinquency is low, while affordability metrics are strong, with rent to income ratios of roughly 20–23%, far better than many comparable MSAs. So while Portland may not have the flashiest inbound migration story, it has an incredible supply-side story. Personally, I loved the vibe. There’s something refreshingly authentic about Portland. It’s got this “weirdness” in the best possible way that gives it character. Baristas take pride in the coffe they brew, Property managers go into detail on the history behind a building’s name they manage. And to top it off, you can get an awesome glass of Oregon Pinot that can stack up to a French burgundy, at half the cost 🤌 Definitely hits different when you’re drinking it on its home turf, with an amazing team! @maxsharkansky Natalina Rettew Johnny De La Espriella, MBA #Portland #Multifamily #RealEstateInvesting #Cashflow #ReplacementCost #ContrarianInvesting #CRE #TrionProperties @trionproperties
