—pregunto. —Unos 100€ a cada uno. Me sale tirado. No entiendes nada.

It’s encouraging to see a growing number of senators recognize that unconditional US military support for Israel is no longer tenable in light of the Netanyahu government’s policies. The work now is to translate that shift into action: alleviating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stopping violence on the West Bank and pursuing paths to end the ongoing fighting across the region.

Today, I voted to block the provision of U.S. military assistance to Israel: 1,000-pound so-called ‘dumb’ bombs and military bulldozers. In the future, I will continue to assess U.S.-funded offensive weapons to Israel on a case-by-case basis, and I will continue to support sending Israel much-needed defensive weapons, like Iron Dome. I have struggled with these Joint Resolutions of Disapproval as much as any vote since I joined Congress. I represent a state with a large Arab and Muslim population and a large Jewish population. And over these last two-plus years, few issues have been as raw, painful, and personal as this one. Throughout that time, I have worked hard to call balls and strikes based on my experience and the facts on the ground, even when some are reluctant to consider new information. My entire life, I have been -- and continue to be -- a strong supporter of a Jewish and democratic State of Israel. The people of Israel, like all people throughout the region, deserve long-term security and peace. But being pro-Israel today is not about simply supporting the political or military agenda of Prime Minister Netanyahu, just like being pro-American should not be equated with loyalty to President Trump. This is a complex truth that many of us who support Israel hold, and it applies to my own patriotism and government as well. I can support the security of a country without supporting the specific policies of any one political party or leader. And if Israelis can take part in rigorous debate and protests of their own government’s policies, Americans supportive of Israel can do the same thing. I have no love lost for the Iranian regime or their proxy groups like Hezbollah. I know firsthand from three tours in Iraq alongside our military how Iran is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans and thousands more civilians in the Middle East. But President Trump committed the U.S. to a war of choice against Iran, alongside Israel, with no evidence of an imminent threat, no clear objectives, and without Congressional approval. Seven weeks in, he has yet to provide a strategy for this war or a clear path to get out of it. So just as I am against more U.S.-funded weapons to Israel today, I am also deeply skeptical of more U.S. funding for the Iran war, which reportedly could be anywhere between $50 to $200 billion, on top of $1 trillion provided to the Pentagon last year. Every American should be invested in the U.S. ending this war with the least possible loss of blood and treasure. It is my hope that we can get a comprehensive and durable ceasefire as soon as possible.

I'm adding my name to @RepRaskin's bill that will establish a commission to review Trump's staggering cognitive decline. For months, I've been consistent in calling for the 25th Amendment to be invoked, and will continue to demand the cabinet act to save our country from a deranged, mentally unstable authoritarian.

J Street position on aid to Israel: This moment demands a reset. The U.S. should end unconditional financial military subsidies to Israel and to move towards a relationship where we treat Israel like any other ally. J Street supports: (1) Phasing out taxpayer-funded military aid when the current agreement ends in 2028. (2) Ensuring Israel can defend itself, by selling – but not subsidizing with U.S. taxpayer dollars – the weapons it needs, including Iron Dome. (3) Enforcing U.S. law on how American arms are used, including withholding certain weapons when those laws are violated. Why now? The current U.S. aid agreement expires in 2028. This is the moment to chart a smarter path forward. At the same time, after the devastation in Gaza and ongoing suffering in the West Bank, it is clear that the status quo is no longer sustainable. Israel is strong, prosperous and capable of paying for its defense. Treating Israel as an exception and supplying it with a blank check worth billions has made support for the country more divisive and less sustainable. Simply put, the U.S. should treat Israel like any other partner. The normalization of this relationship doesn’t weaken the alliance – it strengthens it, protects democracy and secures long-term bipartisan support.

Not really. If bank robbers take control of a bank with civilians, the police don’t usually see it as a success to take them out with an equal number of civilians. Just because an enemy doesn’t care about civilians isn’t a reason to play into them and their goal. What if their goal is to get the civilians killed? Why would anyone oblige them? It’s not deeply disturbing. It’s a basic foundation of our western civilization that we care more about preserving life than simply “it’s better to kill a few innocents than let one enemy escape.” It’s what makes us morale and better. A lot of our western heritage is based on avoiding this brutality.

We hear a lot about this 1:1 ratio and I think it’s worth considering none of us would like to be on the other side of this equation. If the enemy was attacking us and saying “we are only killing one of your civilians for one of your soldiers,” none of us would want to be that “collateral damage.” Some wars in history involved large armies confronting primarily combatants, such as the battle of the Somme or Gettysburg. I think most of us would prefer to be civilians in that war, usually able to avoid the battle. If you read about Gettysburg and there had been thousands of civilians killed we’d see it differently. It’s true that modern wars are sometimes tragically fought among civilians. However, precision weapons have also ostensibly given us an ability to avoid casualties. If there are 1,000 enemy infantry in a town of 1,000 people, and the town is not an essential objective, is it good to destroy the whole place? I don’t think we’d want our civilians on the bad side of that equation. The ratio is problematic. The goal, especially with precision munitions, should be very low civilian casualties, not just the brute force of large numbers of casualties. It’s best to consider this number if we are the civilians that can be victims too. And I don’t think any of us want to be on that side of the equation. Better to humanize the civilians than just see them as a ratio. Let’s all take a step back and think hard on this.
Ryan Saavedra@RyanSaavedra

The New York Times reports that a little over 300 people were killed in these airstrikes. That may sound like a lot, but realize that 60% of those killed (180+, according to the post below) were terrorists, who are legitimate targets in military operations. That means the ratio of combatant to civilian deaths is *less than* 1:1, which is insanely low if you know anything about historical averages in wars dating back many decades.
