@schuyler_t

I don't speak for my employer, they wouldn't trust me to do that anyway.

@LucaAmb @qberthet @octonion It is completely impossible to have a meaningful contribution to 15 papers. A name might be on 15 papers, but it doesn’t mean anything. If this breaks that model, it’s good.

@ClayDesert @mattyglesias Those are good deals and ample examples of them exist, but my city proposed a moratorium before even trying to negotiate, even though the utility said they'd work to not raise electricity rates

I am skeptical of the data center NIMBYs and incredulous at the extremist pro-data center posts from some of the tech guys on here. If the facilities are economically lucrative, cut a deal with locals to make it worth their while. This shouldn't be a huge thing.

@BuildHackSecure @TweetEagle1 @francip Very much depends where you are, but I’d say that’s the median experience yes. In Seattle there’s 4 or 5 different options but availability varies by neighborhood. My first gig connection was from an ISP that only served apartment buildings/condos.

Why are API keys not bound to an IP address allow list? I never see this option available in API services. Failing that, you should also receive an email whenever a new IP address attempts to use your API key. API keys should double up as canary tokens.

@BuildHackSecure @TweetEagle1 @francip I think they did with a business plan, they’re also switching away from PPPoE to DHCP (“IPoE”) so it might get more stable with that. I switched to Comcast last year because they offered 2 gig symmetric for $10 less than I was paying.

Yes, of course it does - yet the policies that Scott has got approved in his ten years in office have had no impact on rent. Every time he’s on the ballot I’m told he will lower rents just like they did in Austin, and every time he wins and fails to deliver. And this is putting aide the multiple non-housing red lines he has crossed.

@SethBorman @mattyglesias Of course, but there’s only so many 500 unit developments to go around. But my point is in the year 2026 underwriting a loan for a SFH can be nearly completely automated.

Airline deregulation (and that other great Jimmy Carter legacy, legalizing interstate banking) is an excellent example of the Democratic Party’s best tradition of attacking entrenched and undeserved privilege in an intelligent win-win way with broad positive sum benefits.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

@ChrisMurphyCT Weren't pre-deregulation airlines *more* focused on upscale customers because the Civil Aeronautics Board essentially banned price competition?

Our group is 2 and 3+ even at the peak of commute, it isn't backed up enough to justify 3+, 2+ would still maintain the minimum standard of 45mph for federal funding, though that only applies for Interstate HOV lanes (5/405). It is also why it goes 2+ from 405 to Redmond. It should be 2+ from I-5 to Redmond and the HOV lane on the left lane. Flopping over to the right lane at 405 has never made any sense and only hampers transit down and creates unsafe merging.

Some of the last vehicles to use the existing northbound I-5 to eastbound SR 520 ramp for at least a couple years. Reminder: Our closure of eastbound SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake begins at 11 p.m. tonight, 5/8, until 5 a.m. Monday, 5/11. More: sr520construction.com/eastbound-sr-5…

@SethBorman @mattyglesias No seriously. Underwriting has never been easier. Interest rates are up. It’s as close to free money as exists if the math works. Someone would fill the niche if it made sense.

@mattyglesias Am I the only one that thinks interstate banking and the resulting issue of banks being too big to fail was a bad thing? To say nothing of the way credit for small business has been drying up.

The stock market dropping $20 trillion or so would cause a recession.

Appreciate @greg_ip citing my analysis of AI contributions to GDP growth. And I agree with him: if growth in AI-related capex were to slow, it would be a headwind for sure but not an economic catastrophe. We might go from 2% real GDP growth to something closer to 1.5-1.75%.

@conorsen @mattyglesias It’s become a lot less lucrative to go into politics, especially at the lower levels (state house etc), compared to other professional jobs over the past 2 decades. Why try to run for congress when you can be a PM and make more money and less stress?

20 years ago I wouldn’t have thought that an electorate generally getting more educated and wealthy would lead to a less professional, less restrained, and more anxious politics. On some level I still don’t really get it.

@jamesacowling Which is an engineering decision which never made sense to me. I can kinda understand if AWS is trying to basically tell people: You shouldn't care about which AZ you are in. But in that case they shouldn't charge you for inter-AZ traffic (and ensure full bisection bandwidth).
