I think if one is trying to figure out if a candidate is sympathetic to Nazis, one of the most important tests is whether the candidate knowingly got a death’s head tattoo signifying an elite, brutal group of SS officers and kept it until the second he wanted to run for Senate and someone noticed. It’s an insult to everyone’s intelligence to suggest otherwise. Sorry, his Medicare thoughts from last week are not permanent body art or absolution.
Jon Favreau@jonfavs

As the community note makes clear, I didn't delete it because I stand by it. But if MAGA world has decided their best play is to insult Mainers' intelligence by trying to fool them into thinking Platner's old tattoo makes him a Nazi sympathizer, best of luck in November!

So when this operation succeeds - and it will, as Iran simply does not have the ability to stop US naval transit through the Strait - will all the people who have been freaking out about this change their tune? Or will they just find another reason that this war is a failure?

There is no logical reason to extrapolate anything about the Michigan Senate race from Maine. The states, candidates, and polling all look very different. Platner didn't win the primary in Maine. The primary is actually still ongoing. He won because Mills dropped out. Why did Mills drop out? Well, her heart did seem in it and her funds were dried up. I also think MANY participated in an inevitability narrative for Platner. "He's a POWER HORSE" that's based a bit on vapers. There are signs of a spooked electorate, perhaps related to candidate age. There was a feed-back loop. The same feed-back loop does not exist for El-Sayed in Michigan, so try not to feed into it. In Maine, the polling was legitimately odd. It was clear that Platner had an edge, but there was real instability in what that margin looked like. So it's clear that he was likely going to beat Mills, all things remaining equal, but not by necessarily the blow-out margins indicated by polling. Also a lot of people weren't tuned in. They'd heard his name. Heard he was a winner. That's about it. So, another feed-back loop to resist: attributing power to Platner that he does not have. If he'd actually won that race w/ +35, that would have been a show of strength. Maybe vibes-based strength, but still strength. In Michigan, the polling is different. It doesn't look odd. The margins aren't all over the place. In fact, it looks incredibly static. 60% of voters distributed somewhat evenly between 3 candidates. 40% of voters unaccounted for. Poll after poll after poll shows this. Some polling has also shown McMorrow & Stevens both have higher ceilings than El-Sayed. El-Sayed and Platner are also very different candidates. El-Sayed is definitely running as a DSA/far-left type. As much as Platner is claimed by the DSA/far-left, that's not really the campaign he ran in Maine. More "Rugged Local Tough Guy with Progressive Values." But he ran on his own persona more than any ideology. In fact, take from this what you will: Platner, per his reddit, WAS a member of the DSA as early as 2018. He claimed to organize with them. Did you ever hear about that? No. Were Platner/DSA-types mum on this for a reason? Who's to say. So, there are many reasons not to extrapolate the very odd situation in Maine to Michigan. And, overall, I would urge people to be careful about feedback loops. What happened in Maine was partially determined by a Power-Vibes narrative. The vibes are, again, a bit artificial at this point, so no need to artificially augment them even further, particularly given Platner's shadiness. Then, also resist this: taking the faux-Power out of Maine and creating ANOTHER self-augmenting vibes-based loop vis à vis El-Sayed. Literally no empirical reason to do this. Especially given pretty impressive results from non-DSA Democrats basically everywhere else. Maine is a bit of a trash-fire right now. It's also an OUTLIER, with very unique variables. Don't extrapolate elsewhere. Finally: I do think El-Sayed has a chance in Michigan, but likely only if McMorrow and Stevens split the vote. Progressive candidates of the DSA-ilk are typically hitting an electoral ceiling of 30%. We're seeing this everywhere. They lose w/ 30% or, in some cases, like NJ-11, they win w/ 30%. They don't go much higher than that. Extrapolate from the *national* pattern to Michigan. Not the weird outlier situation in the weird outlier state.

@davepl1968 Canadians don’t understand how much better America is because they’ve never experienced it. Rather, they sit around with their smug high from thinking their system is better because theCBC told them so. Only after you live in the US do you realize.

Allow me to rock your world. America has about 6000 hospitals. 5121 of those are publicly accessible and 1224 are completely free. That's twice as many charity hospitals as Canada has Tim Horton's. Literally. Then, when you see a doctor, the doctor speaks English and went to school somewhere you've heard of. Harvard is not the only way to get educated, but it is nice in the fall. We don't push people into medically assisted suicide for cost reasons. We don't ask people with emergency conditions to sit in the ER for 10 hours before they see a doctor. So yes, if you have a cutting-edge disease and you go to a private hospital and get the best care in the world, you're on the hook for it. But note that you are also ALIVE.
Mark Slapinski@mark_slapinski

People say Canadian healthcare is not free, because we pay taxes for it. But in America, people pay taxes and still have to pay for healthcare out of their pockets. And if they are broke, the hospital tells them to go die.

My timeline, of course, is full of angry people (again) claiming that the Nazis didn't actually MEAN socialism ("it was just a marketing ploy" seems to be the favorite talking point). In fact, they were. And it's literally in their name. When people tell you who they are, believe them.

No one needs representation based on immutable characteristics. No one needs 'political,' or 'voting,' power based on race. No one is disenfranchised or disadvantaged because their arbitrary social group doesn't have specific representation. Racial discrimination is illegal.

No one making the argument that black Americans won't have fair representation in government has explained why or how. This seems to be an assumed truth. Black Americans must have specific representation. But why? For what? Why can't black Americans be treated as Americans?

@0neangrymidget @fllgator1 @chadfelixg But a compact district encompassing a city, isn’t a district based on race. Taking the action to gerrymander the city, that is majority minority, into rural based white districts, is gerrymandering by race and creating districts based on race.
