As the international community continues its efforts to restore democratic integrity in Sierra Leone, we note with concern reports from Sierra Leone's Ministry of Foreign Affairs @TimKabba, regarding an invitation from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to a ministerial minerals conference on February 4, 2026. Given the serious allegations linking the current @julius_maadabio regime to the expansion of narcotics trafficking, we respectfully urge Secretary @SecRubio to review this invitation. Such an engagement appears inconsistent with the @realDonaldTrump's firm stance against illegitimate regimes associated with illicit cartels. On behalf of President-elect Dr. Samura Kamara, we maintain that U.S.-Sierra Leone relations will find their most prosperous and stable footing under a government that upholds the rule of law and enjoys legitimate democratic mandates from the people. @StateDept @JDVance @_AfricanUnion @USEmbFreetown @EUinSierraLeone @EmmanuelMacron @Commonwealthse1 @UN_UNOWAS @ecowas_cedeao @antonioguterres @AsstSecStateAF

The arrest and detention of Lansana Dumbuya, the APC Secretary General, for calling President Bio Tiffy Tiffy Jankoliko is a direct attack on freedom of speech and a dangerous shrinking of democratic political space. In a democracy, dissent is not a crime and criticism of leaders must never be punished. Silencing opposition voices undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in governance. One thing is very clear, the APC will never again roll over and give in in the face of intimidation and bullying by anyone. At this Point, we must all be resolved and say this is the point of FULL STOP 🛑.

Another good move. @julius_maadabio Govt led by @mof_sl have avoided borrowing from the domestic market through bearer bonds for several months. This has brought down interest rates considerably. And banks now are now liquid enough to support the private sector. Very significant.
Rodney Michael@superrod001

Something must be right that @bankofsl and @mof_sl are doing. Stunned when street traders told me they prefer to keep his Leones to dollars. For us in the business community, that is a subtle endorsement and show of confidence in the Leone you can wish for. Well done!

I wish my good friend and colleague @SoeMarrah had checked President J. Trump’s June 4, 2025 Presidential Proclamation to understand the real reason behind the partial suspension of entry for Sierra Leone nationals on B-1, B-2, B-1/B-2, F, M, and J visas, instead of joining the “narcotics bandwagon.” Section 3(d)(i) clearly states: “According to the Overstay Report, Sierra Leone had a B-1/B-2 visa overstay rate of 15.43 percent and an F, M, and J visa overstay rate of 35.83 percent. Sierra Leone has historically failed to accept back its removable nationals.” My friend is usually meticulous, but this time, for the first time, 😂 he has been “kidnapped” by the propagandists.
Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah@SoeMarrah

I’m eagerly anticipating my friend’s post about how it is under President Bio that for the first time Sierra Leone has been globally known as a narcotics transshipment hub, with Sierra Leoneans—including the Vice President, Cabinet members, and their families—banned from entering the US as part of Trump’s partial travel ban. This is a government of many historic firsts indeed! 🫡

The sheer impudence to refer to those who “surround” President Julius Maada Bio’s regime as sycophants is a shameful misuse of free speech. Democracy does not grant anyone the right to hurl insults, make reckless comments or impugn the characters of those they disagree with. You can be critical without being repugnant because tone and choice of words matter in enhancing constructive national conversation. Therefore, for your much-needed edification, President Bio’s regime is NOT “surrounded” by “sycophants and yes men,” but by professional, experienced, knowledgeable and decent men and women. While they may not share your inclination for toxic rhetoric, they are in public service out of love for our country and deep commitment to their fellow citizens.
Basita Michael@MichaelBasita

President Julius Maada Bio’s regime, unopposed by a weak and feeble opposition, unhindered by a compromised Anti-Corruption Commission, unchecked by a largely self-censored media, surrounded and propped up by sycophants and yes men who are unwilling or scared to disagree with him and offer him honest counsel, have driven citizens to rely on foreign outlets like Reuters, Africa Confidential, The Times, and OCCRP to expose scandals, such as the luxury property acquisitions by the First Lady and her family in The Gambia, which have been widely discussed locally but only gained traction through international reporting. The regime’s confrontations with foreign entities, including mining company OCTEA, alongside incidents like the country becoming a haven transshipment of drugs, are gradually shaping the president’s legacy overshadowing any positive achievements. Sadly unrestrained power and corruption have pitted the regime against foreign entities, which have become de facto watchdogs, filling the void left by failing national institutions such as the ACC, opposition, and media. Though their motives may not always be devoid of self-serving interests, their role underscores a failing democracy, where accountability and the rule of law elude us. To salvage our democracy, we must recommit to a free press, a robust and fair justice system, and the rule of law, empowering citizens, not outsiders, to drive accountability and shape the future of the land that we love.

The Availability of Disaggregated Data The claim we have been making regarding the unavailability of disaggregated data from the June 24, 2023, elections in Sierra Leone is substantiated by multiple sources indicating attempts by both the European Union and local observers to obtain this information. The European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) explicitly called upon the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone to publish disaggregated results data at the polling station level to ensure transparency in the election process. Their request highlights concerns about the integrity of the results and the need for a clear breakdown of the data to allow for public scrutiny. Moreover, local civil society organizations and political parties have also echoed these demands, suggesting that the withholding of such data may impede the understanding of the electoral outcome and raise questions about the legitimacy of the results reported by the Electoral Commission. *Impact on Democracy* The lack of disaggregated electoral data has significant implications for democracy in Sierra Leone. First, it undermines the electoral process by fostering distrust among the electorate. When citizens are unable to verify the results through detailed breakdowns, skepticism regarding the legitimacy and fairness of the elections grows. This was evident in the 2023 elections, where the opposition party rejected the results, citing irregularities and the lack of transparency in the electoral process. Secondly, without this data, it becomes challenging to conduct meaningful analysis regarding voter behavior, turnout, and preferences across different demographics and regions. This can prevent political analysts, researchers, and policymakers from understanding the electorate's needs and concerns, thereby impacting future electoral strategies and governance decisions. Furthermore, the continued withholding of such data could lead to increased social tensions and political instability, as parties and voters feel alienated from a system that they perceive as non-transparent or biased. This may eventually weaken democratic norms and values, potentially setting the stage for legitimacy crises in future elections. Additionally, the electoral commission's failure to promptly publish disaggregated results has raised concerns from various international and local observers, including the Carter Center, which expressed worries about the transparency of the tabulation process. These concerns have been reiterated by several countries and organizations that have called upon the commission to provide detailed results to uphold electoral integrity and public confidence in the electoral system. Moreover, the elections were accompanied by violent incidents, notably at the opposition All People's Congress headquarters, illustrating the tense political environment and the potential for unrest stemming from disputed electoral outcomes. Such incidents can exacerbate divisions within the society and raise questions about the government's capacity to maintain peace and order post-elections. These dynamics further complicate the political landscape, leading to a heightened risk of prolonged political conflict and diminishing trust in democratic institutions. R/ Ibrahim.

This morning, I had a fruitful meeting with the Managing Director and Head of Africa for British International Investment (BII) @BritishIntInv, Chris Chijiutomi. I used the opportunity to highlight efforts by government to strengthen the investment climate in Sierra Leone and our interest in deepening private sector participation in a range of catalytic sectors like agriculture and energy. We spoke at length about the foundational role of the energy sector in unlocking growth. I identified opportunities for private sector investment across the entire energy value chain-generation to distribution and its potential to scale private sector participation in other sectors once reliable and sufficient energy is available for productive use.

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio Presides Over AU C-10 Meeting And Endorsement Of 25th Report African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Saturday, 15 February 2025 - On the sidelines of the 38th Session of the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone and Coordinator of the African Union Committee of Ten (C-10) Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council, convened a strategic meeting to advance Africa's stance on UN Security Council reform. The C-10 Heads of State and Government engaged in constructive deliberations, reaffirming the Common African Position, as articulated in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. The position advocates for two permanent seats with all privileges and prerogatives, including the right of veto, and two additional non-permanent seats for Africa in a reformed Security Council. During the meeting, the Committee endorsed the 25th Report of the C-10, along with the Outcome of the Eleventh Meeting of C-10 Foreign Ministers held in Algiers, Algeria, from June 9–10, 2024. The accompanying draft Decision was also approved, paving the way for these documents to be presented to the African Union Assembly for formal adoption. Welcoming His Excellency Philemon Yang, President of the United Nations General Assembly (PGA) for the 79th Session, as a Special Guest, President Bio emphasized the importance of his leadership in the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on Security Council reform. “His Excellency Yang’s role will be instrumental in advancing the progress made in previous sessions,” President Bio noted, highlighting the significance of sustained dialogue and strategic engagement. The endorsement of the 25th Report signals Africa's unwavering commitment to achieving equitable representation in the United Nations Security Council, reflecting the continent's growing influence in global governance.
