What they didn’t tell us: This may actually be one of the biggest land & money games in the city’s recent history. The Official Story •The BMC announced a ₹3,200 crore desalination plant at Manori claiming it will secure Mumbai’s water future. •Capacity: 200 MLD (million litres/day). •Technology: Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) •Deal: 20-year “Take-or-Pay” contract. Translation:- Even if the plant doesn’t supply a single drop BMC will still be bound to pay private companies. Now BMC has also invited bids for a second desalination plant at Versova despite the Manori project still being delayed. The Real Numbers •Cost of desal water: ₹42 per 1,000 litres. •Cost of reservoir water: ₹7 per 1,000 litres. •Meaning: 6 times costlier. •Over 20 years this contract could bleed Mumbai’s public treasury of thousands of crores. The Red Flags 🚩 1.Global Failures Ignored:- •Chennai’s ₹1,033 crore Nemmeli plant runs at just 50% efficiency. •California’s Carlsbad plant locked taxpayers into a 30 year overpriced water deal. The water was so salty & unusable, officials dumped it into lakes. •Israel & Singapore use desal only as an emergency buffer not as a primary source. Mumbai knows this yet signs the deal. Why? 2.Land, Not Water, is the Prize •The Manori site covers 12 hectares of untouched coastline. •Earlier zoning: Tourism zone – “No permanent construction allowed.” •Now: reclassified as “Government Project Land.” •Once that stamp is applied → roads get built, restrictions vanish & the coastline flips into prime real estate. A no-go beach suddenly becomes developable. 3.Tender Drama •Tender floated, cancelled & rewritten four times. •Reason? To suit the “right bidders.” •Now 21 giants, from Adani to L&T are circling the project. If it was really about water, why this cat & mouse game? The Brine Bomb For every litre of fresh water, desal plants produce 1.5 litres of toxic brine. This chemical-loaded salt water goes back into the sea, killing fish, choking coasts & destroying mangroves. Manori, Malad, Gorai fishing & tourism based communities will pay the real price. Authorities Involved •BMC Standing Committee – approved the project. •Hydraulic Engineering Department, BMC – technical justifications. •Environment & Urban Development Department (Govt. of Maharashtra) – cleared land use change. •Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) Authorities – permitted project on ecologically sensitive coastline. •Contractor-Consortium (Private Players) – to execute & enjoy the assured revenue stream. Why This Smells of a Scam •If water was the real issue → cheaper, quicker fixes exist: repair leaking pipelines (Mumbai loses 25–30% water in leakages daily), recycle sewage water, rejuvenate reservoirs. •Instead the city is being pushed into the costliest, least efficient & riskiest solution. •The timing of tender rewrites & the land zoning flip raise the biggest red flag: this is not about water it’s about land & contracts. What’s Next? •Manori project (₹3,200 crore) – already surrounded by suspicion. •Versova project – BMC has invited Expressions of Interest. Same playbook, bigger stakes. Soon two of Mumbai’s last untouched coastlines could be stamped, cleared & turned into mega project zones under the garb of “water security” The Big Question ?? If this is really about saving Mumbaikars from water shortage – why are we signing land heavy, money heavy, 20 year contracts with global failure track records, instead of fixing basic supply & leakage issues? Because desal plants don’t just produce water. They produce land. And in Mumbai land is everything. This isn’t a water project. This is a Multi Crore Land Scam waiting to unfold. And once the coastline is gone, we’ll never get it back.

As per early media reports & police sources, actor Shefali Jariwala’s sudden death may be linked to an anti ageing injection allegedly taken after a full day of fasting for a religious puja. The cause of death is suspected to be cardiac arrest & the post mortem was conducted at Cooper Hospital. If these preliminary details are true, they raise urgent & serious questions: 1. Who prescribed this injection? 2. Was it safe to administer on an empty stomach or during fasting? 3. Was informed consent taken with all possible risks explained? 4. Was the medicine approved, regulated and safely administered? 5. Was the dermatologist or clinic following ethical & medical guidelines? If there was any medical negligence, misuse of unregulated injectables, or lapse in judgment then accountability must follow…not only for Shefali’s sake but to prevent such tragedies in the future. This isn’t just a personal loss…it’s a public health concern. The booming aesthetic industry must be held to the highest safety & ethical standards, especially when dealing with injectables and off label treatments.
