@PhillipsPOBrien Spanish flu killed as many American troops in WW1 as German bullets did. We think that deadly flus a thing of the past?

@LibertyNut1 She’s committed to the rule of law. Fundamentally nothing else matters. Plus she’s cute. Is that ok to say? Fundamentally, I think it is.

@anders_aslund You think Orban was quietly told by Hungarian military / security establishment that there was no path for him but conceding and the faster the better if he wanted to stay out of prison?

Peter Magyar's landslide victory in Hungary offers many inspiring lessons: 1. Even an incumbent kleptocrat of 16 years with control of nearly all media & state institutions can be beaten. 2. What is needed is a strong political leader who credibly stands for democracy, a united opposition & a free internet. 3. Foreign interference of the US with endorsements from Trump, Vance & Rubio did not help. Nor did Russian interference & disinformation help. 4. This is a big blow to all the rightwing extremists in Europe who came to campaign for Orban. 5. The biggest blow was probably to MAGA, CPAC & Trump who have campaigned for Orban for no conceivable reason. This augurs for a big loss for the GOP in the midterm elections on November 3. 6. The other big loser is Putin, who is likely to face a much more united EU supporting Ukraine & more sanctions on Russia. 7. Slovak PM Fico & Czech PM Babis are likely to heed the results and become more supportive of the EU, which should more easily take early unanimous decisions. 8. The big winner is Ukraine, against which Orban & Trump ran. Now the EU should be able to decide on €90 bn for Ukraine & tougher sanctions on Russia. Ukraine can now happily ignore Trump's calls for Ukraine giving up territory to Russia. 9. Unless the US apologizes for its support for Russia, kleptocracy & autocracy in Hungary, the chasm between the US & Europe will widen substantially. (Orban should be praised for conceding so fast.)

@edwinhayward Film a disappointment. Book starts well but loses the reader through grandstanding tedium, ha. Movie doesn't fix it. Still the tedium, Gosling porn (he brought his cardigan to space), predictable, trite dialogue and risible attempts to uplift us all with nonstop "arias". Nah.

@Xaraphim "Netflix: Nuclear Blast Live"? Would probably get a lot of views. Not sure it would make the world a safer or a better place. It's a reminder to every country still trying to make their own bomb exactly what they're missing out on.

genuine question that i think about more than i should should the US coordinate with every nuclear power and detonate a live nuclear device on global broadcast television pick a dead zone in the pacific or something every superpower signs off, every camera on earth pointed at it, every nation watching simultaneously we have entire generations of world leaders who have never actually witnessed what a nuclear weapon does to the physical world they read about hiroshima, they see the old footage, and then they go back to their meetings and throw the word around like its nothing a live unedited detonation changes that permanently imo you cannot unsee it you cannot go back to your summit and casually threaten nuclear war after watching it happen in real time with every other nuclear power standing next to you the terror of these weapons has faded into abstraction and that abstraction is genuinely dangerous is this delusional or is nobody saying it because it sounds crazy on the surface

@IAPonomarenko @nexta_tv All wrong anyway. The energy weapon, either Russia gas or Hormuz, has been used and noted .....it will drive further investment and diversification (already huge) to solar and nuclear. Days of relying on hydrocarbon autocracies are coming to an end. Russia loses. Resilience wins

Oil above $100: RDIF chief says Europe will pay a “colossal price” for Russophobia Head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev commented on the surge in oil prices, saying Russia remains a key energy supplier for the global economy. According to him, neither global stability nor sustainable economic growth is possible without Russian energy resources. “Europe will have to pay a colossal price for the mistakes of Euro-bureaucrats and Russophobic policies,” he said.

@McFaul @JJWatt @JohnJHarwood I spent a number of years in Latin America. Limited Spanish, no dancing skills, the half time show brought it all back. A brilliant evocation of life in the Americas, life in general and it said to all Latino people and others, look at us, we are a great people and culture.

@nfergus You sure? Unregulated relatively opaque enterprises have issued stablecoin with a promise of $1:1 liquidity. You certain that equivalent to cash liquidity is on the other side of the Balance sheet? And what happens if it’s not? RUN!!!! That is a pre 2008 level of “confidence”

@brianstelter Your son brought a gun and magazines to a riot that he had no business being at. Approached officers and fought with them. They have parents, too, and he put their lives in danger. Shame on him.

A statement from the family of Alex Pretti, obtained by CNN: "We are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you."
