Now playing, latest episode of Biography podcast with @WouterTeunissen & @connorzwick 🎧
Wouter Teunissen@WouterTeunissen

I sat down with @connorzwick , founder and CEO of @speak. We talked about what it takes to build one of the most ambitious consumer AI companies in the world and how AI is about to completely reshape how software companies are built. Today Speak does $100M ARR with over 15 million worldwide users... This was an insanely great episode, you'll hear a lot about: Why Connor flew to South Korea after realising the country spends ~1% of GDP learning English! If the application layer is where the biggest AI companies will be built How Speak built for AI YEARS before the recent boom The danger of “magical thinking” and why most founders are focusing on the wrong things Why smaller, faster teams will dominate in the AI era You’re going to want to see this. As we all know on X, agentic AI coding crossed a capability threshold at the end of 2025 such that the era of software engineers writing code by hand was over. @speak, we're urgently embracing this fundamental change to the way we develop software. I wrote up a snapshot of what we’re observing and learning, and where we think things are going: speak.com/blog/agentic-e…

Something shifted in December 2025. AI coding went from typing code to directing agents with natural language. The pace is disorienting. Opinions from January are already stale. We've made this transformation our top priority. Very-much-in-flux snapshot of what we're learning from @adhsu speak.com/blog/agentic-e…

We just rebuilt one of the hardest parts of Speak: matching what learners say to the words on screen. Matching v2 combines ASR with a new phonetic model that understands the actual sounds users produce. Result: about 40% fewer false negatives and a much smoother learning experience. speak.com/blog/matching-…

Founded by former Thiel fellows, AI language tutoring app Speak started its journey in Seoul, South Korea. But as it enters the U.S. market, it’ll have to compete with better-known rivals like Duolingo. forbes.com/sites/rashishr… (Photo: Speak)
