I’ve been fighting the “finish something” problem hard lately. Today I'm making GitSmarter public as my first open-source repo. Native Windows Git client. C++. Direct2D. ~2.5 MB. No Electron. Implements Git itself instead of wrapping it. Still early. Proud of it anyway.

I had no idea this would get so much interest. This was a side project I worked on at the end of last year and abandoned in January. Should I pick it back up again? Is there enough interest in an app like this?

I am ~60% sure I first heard this lesson from @Jonathan_Blow, but I’m glad I had a chance to retell it on Wookash, because it has been an extremely important programming lesson for me. youtube.com/shorts/Qr0fw_f…

Awesome work, man! 🙂 Something's off with the font rendering IMHO, though. I'm running a 4K monitor at 150% scaling and the text looks wrong (weirdly overbold and blurry). I've never noticed before because it looks fine in dark mode, but this version now starts in light mode (matching my Windows), and it's very noticeable in light mode. Checked the old versions and it's the same in them too, so this isn't new. In case it helps, I remember @vkrajacic had a similar issue in File Pilot (I raised it) and he did some fixes that improved it (though it still doesn't quite look as good as "normal" ClearType text rendering, IMO). The thread on this is in his Voidstar Discord: discord.com/channels/10594… - lhecker has some gems in that thread that might help, plus Vjekoslav says what he did to improve it.

The first video from the Handmade Network Expo is finally going live in just 30 minutes! @nicbarkeragain and @antovsky have joined forces in a game studio called Ostrich Effect, and today they're ready to show their first game: an RTS with a programming twist. Link in thread ⤵

For anyone saying 250ms start-up time is too slow, I agree. But take it up with Microsoft, it's the time it takes to start DirectX and create a window. 10x could start in around 60ms.

@mpattwit @Wischa89 @mouhkay88 Wer lässt denn sowas 12 Stunden am Tag, und dann noch jeden Tag laufen? Realistisch sind eher 6-8 Stunden am Tag und nur an Hitzetagen. Also vielleicht an 10-20 Tage im Jahr.

@Wischa89 @mouhkay88 Bei ca. 12 Stunden täglich: Tageskosten: 1.000 Watt × 12 Stunden × 0,30 € = 3,60 € pro Tag Monatliche Koste: 3,60 € × 30 Tage = 108 € pro Monat dh jede 2 Monate ein neues Gerät

@thomasklemenc I was just now using the previous version and updated, and saw you had a "buy me a coffee" link in the previous version but not in the current one. I was just about to give some money to you, you deserve it! Now I've no idea where to find the link 😅 Let me know please, thanks!

@Wassimulator At my workplace we do this using a selfhosted Nextcloud instance. Uploader doesn't need to create an account. filemail.com seems to be a commercial service that allows you to create links/forms to upload without the uploader needing to create an account.

Looking for a service that allows to send people an upload link to upload files of any size, and I can download the files on my end. Critically I am looking for something that does NOT require the uploader to create an account. I expect to pay for it, not looking for a free tool.

@thomasklemenc really impressive, in general custom made UI are bloody fast but looks bad. Yours is both fast and good looking :) what's graphics API? directX?
