Tamil Nadu’s Chennai-One mobility app turned an instant hit among commuters clocking 1.3 lakh downloads and 4,394 ticket bookings within 24 hours of its launch. Unveiled by chief minister M K Stalin on Monday, the app, billed as the first in the country, brings together the city’s major transport networks, integrating 621 MTC routes involving 3,436 buses, three suburban and MRTS railway lines, and two metro corridors in one ticketing platform. Of the 4,394 bookings on Day 1, MTC buses led with 2,308 (53%) tickets, followed by suburban/ MRTS trains at 1,110 (25%) and metro at 976 (22%). Namma Yatri autos also feature on the app, with one lakh drivers signed up. Designed by CUMTA at a cost of ₹8 crore, Chennai-One runs on a GPS-powered model similar to Uber and Rapido, tracking users and vehicles in real time. It suggests the nearest stop or station, displays live routes and schedules and allows commuters to buy tickets through UPI and scan them on boarding, enabling cashless transaction. Tickets are valid until the end of the day. It is maintained under a five year contract by Bengaluru-based Moving Tech Innovations Private Limited, which operates the Namma Yatri mobility platform. The app offers multiroute trip suggestions, next-vehicle updates and lists top city destinations with images to help visitors plan journeys. However, tickets still need to be purchased separately for each mode of travel. CUMTA member-secretary I Jeyakumar said talks are on with private bus operators to bring 1,500 more buses under the network. “We are also ready with technology for railway return passes. Discussions are underway to finalize timings with railways. Monthly pass booking for MTC will soon be added,” he said, adding that tie-ups with Ola and Uber are also in the pipeline. “The govt’s Vidiyal Payanam free bus scheme for women and free-college pass schemes are also being integrated,” he said.
