As a survivor of assault, I’m constantly aware of my surroundings in ways most people don’t see. Yesterday, I was working from a coffee shop after being told to leave my office because my perpetrator was in the building (yes we work together, yes they still have job, it’s a long story). A man sat at my table despite plenty of open seats. I tried to ignore it. When he left, a staff member came over and said, “That was weird. I was in a long line at 7:45 AM today at the grocery store that opened at 8 o’clock for seniors only. The flight attendant comes over, and instead of backing me up, she tries the classic “let’s find a solution” approach. Suddenly I’m being asked to compromise like I’m in a corporate meeting and not a passenger who planned ahead.
