The Long Goodbye Before the disease, my mom — Kathleen, or “Priss” — was unstoppable. She worked 19-hour days, kept everything spotless, remembered everyone’s birthday, and always had a dog at her feet. People adored her. But dementia doesn’t care how kind you are. The first signs came slowly. She got lost driving, then confused about money. One day, she crashed her car and thought she was in Dallas. That’s when I knew something was deeply wrong. She was eventually diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia, a cruel form that steals personality first. She became paranoid, angry, sometimes violent. It was like watching a stranger wear my mother’s face. We kept her at home as long as we could. Then she lived with us during COVID until it became too much. We brought in caregivers and finally moved her back to her own home, where she was happiest. She never went into a facility. I kept that promise. There were brief, beautiful moments. Twice, she looked straight at me and said, “Liz… my brain is crazy.” It broke me. Because she knew. She just couldn’t stop it. Her care cost over $10,000/month. Long-term care insurance reimbursed $4,000…the rest was on us. Medicare didn’t help. Families shoulder most of this financially, physically, emotionally. By the time she passed, I’d become invisible. I gained weight. I fell into depression. Caregiving is trauma. But it’s also love in its rawest, fiercest form. I wasn’t there when she passed. I was recovering from sepsis after a car wreck. But I felt her go. A warmth moved through me, and I just knew. If you’re starting this journey: Find your tribe. Take the video. Say the words. Prepare early. You can’t go back and do it over. I did everything I could. And I know she’d be proud. I wouldn’t trade one minute. For my mom, Kathleen “Priss” — and @Karen75412 , who stood by her when I couldn’t. 💙
