"There are literally hundreds or thousands of people who have just vanished... and many of them have been last seen in the presence of Israeli troops." @AlexCrawfordSky tells me about the newsroom-wide effort to trace the last known movements of a mother and daughter in Gaza who were last seen alive in Israeli military custody. “I see a hollowing out of the Geneva Conventions,” warns @ICRC president Mirjana Spoljaric. “Civilians are systematically reduced to numbers and statistics. We are losing sight of humanity, which has to be put at the center of all of this. “We cannot accept the levels of destruction. We cannot accept the levels of suffering anymore. The numbers of casualties and displaced people and the rhetoric – the rhetoric around this is most problematic because it lowers the barriers. It lowers the moral frontiers to doing the worst.”

Israel carried out a “triple attack” on health workers in southern Lebanon, killing at least three paramedics. One of them is Fadel Serhan. We spent days with him and his team earlier this month as they described how they worked in fear of being attacked. Today, they were.
Hugo Bachega@hugobachega

Lebanon’s health ministry has accused Israel of deliberately targeting health workers across the country. We spent days with paramedics in Nabatieh, which is being hammered by the Israeli military. They live away from their families, and work in constant fear of being attacked.

A series of disjointed, hard-to-follow and sometimes-profane comments capped by threatening to wipe out Iran and attacking the pope have left many with the impression of a deranged autocrat mad with power and revived the debate about Trump's mental health. nytimes.com/2026/04/13/us/…

"The death toll was expected to rise: rescue workers with ashen faces and bleeding hands were still pulling bodies out from under the rubble at several sites in Beirut on Thursday afternoon. It was a higher figure than the number of people killed in the 2020 Beirut port blast." ft.com/content/5501d3…

Among the dead were also scores of children, a poet, an advocate for victims of the 2020 Beirut blast, two journalists and four Lebanese Army soldiers. The health ministry said 110 of those killed were children, women and elderly people. | The 10 minutes that set Lebanon ablaze by @rayajalabi ft.com/content/5501d3… via @ft

It took Israel only 10 minutes to carry out one of the worst mass-killings in Lebanon since the end of the country’s civil war in 1990. Lebanese are still searching for loved ones under rubble and in hospital morgues. Hospitals are overwhelmed with patients, many of them children. “I thought they bombed a school at first,” the head of a hospital in Beirut said. theguardian.com/world/2026/apr…?

In Lebanon, there is no ceasefire. For 10 minutes yesterday, the whole country came under heavy Israeli bombardment. Israel says it targeted Hezbollah. But busy, densely populated residential areas were hit: it knew that it would lead to a high number of casualties. More than 200 people have been killed, over 800 injured, according to the health ministry. Lebanon’s president called it a “massacre”. Our report for the BBC News at Ten last night.

Criticism over Israeli military actions on the Lebanese capital Beirut is mounting. The Italian embassy statement : ‘bombing a capital, hitting densely populated areas and sowing death among civilians, means violating every principle of international humanitarian law’
Italy in Lebanon@ItalyinLebanon

Yesterday's raids on Beirut and the rest of #Lebanon are a very serious and unacceptable act: bombing a capital, hitting densely populated areas and sowing death among civilians, means violating every principle of international humanitarian law. The Italian Embassy in Beirut mourns with all the Nation. @LBpresidency @grandserail @mofalebanon1

“The Israeli army can say whatever it wants, but it is not providing any evidence. What I see on the ground is families terrorised - videos of people jumping from balconies to escape, images of children wounded by shrapnel and trapped under rubble. This is also my city. I’ve walked these streets countless times. The strikes came without warning, during rush hour” For @BBCNewsnight on Israel’s claims that it struck Hezbollah centres and took precautions to “mitigate harm to civilians”.
