@Akshat_World You should not adjust the returns in USD terms. Instead get the returns post-inflation. Inflation in Pakistan 2024: ~12.63% 2023: 29.18% 2022: 12.15% So, returns in 2023 were really ~25% after considering inflation.

Pakistan Stock Market was one of the best performing stock market in 2023. It delivered around 55% returns. - Was it a great economy? [😂] - But, was it beating the US stock market? Yes But, this is where people read headlines. And, go away. What people miss is that: in that year, Pakistani Rupee lost around 23-25% to USD. So if you adjust the returns in USD terms: Pakistan Stock Market gave roughly 24% returns This was equal to S&P 500 for that year. And, much lower than Nasdaq. Reason I am telling you this story: b/c Indian investors keep looking at their returns in INR. And, think: oh we are going to live and invest in India only, so why does it matter to us? Well, it does (A LOT) you just refuse to acknowledge it.

If a person had bought 10 gms of SGB, he can still buy 10 gms of physical gold now with the SGB maturity amount. Please don't write if you are not aware of the subject.

@jithin_5581 @jaganm People who invested in SGB instead of physical gold would have made more money thanks to the discount, 2.5% interest and tax savings. Nothing has changed with this budget except the gold price which has affected all forms of gold.

I was probably the only finance guy who discouraged people from owning SGBs. The selling of SGB began roughly in 2015. Now, the bonds have started to mature. And, the government by playing around with the import duty & capital gains, has reduced your returns dramatically. People have been robbed off at least 9-10% of their purchase value of Gold. Not many people see it. If you had physical gold, however, there was no obligation to hold it till maturity. The next big dumb move would be the EPF/PPF. The rates have hardly gone up. While, the inflation has gone up considerably in the economy. These are wealth losing instruments now.

@Raj11_Speaks @Akshat_World Yes. So moving funds from SGB to physical gold now will give us the same amount of gold as if he had bought gold instead of SGB(in 2015). And additionally, CG tax saving, 2.5% interest in these 8 yrs.

@saurabh_1123 @Akshat_World The SGB amount at maturity is tax-free. The gold has more than doubled between 2015-2024. When you look gold as investment SGB makes sense. Physical gold in case of security when govt collapses.

@Akshat_World The day the SGB matures, the amount can be used to buy physical gold/ETF right away. They will be in the same(or a better) situation when compared to someone who bought physical gold in 2015.

@trgowtham Because there is a lock-in. And, that when the benefits were supposed to be passed off, the price of gold was to made to correct in India by playing with the import duty. On physical gold there is no lock in.

Akshat sir, you're spot on. SGBs seemed like a golden opportunity, but government policies have made them less appealing. It's eye opening to see how physical gold could have been a smarter choice. And the EPF/PPF situation is concerning—rates stagnant while inflation soars. Time to rethink our strategies. Who else is re-evaluating their investments?
