@senatorshoshana @BenSasse I think the shift to "cold dating" is a big problem in itself. Of course it's awkward. I have had a girlfriend or wife more or less continuously from 15-50 years old - all happened spontaneously from mixed socialising or work. Never had to make it romantic from the start.

One thing though (dare I challenge my favorite @bensasse) while I think many of us are on our phones too much, I don't think that's what's causing collapse of sex and dating. I think it's something more complex. On dates, men aren't pulling out their phones. But their social skills are atrocious in different ways - trauma dumping on first dates, rudeness, having nothing to say for themselves, a lack of curiosity about other people. Some of this points to phones- the many men who ask me out and ghost the moment I say yes. It's not the phone exactly but the being able to move on once they're happy they got some approval. There's also the men who announce to me on dates that they're really awkward. It's this lack of confidence and belief in themselves and it's so pervasive. I can track and trace some of this but not all of it. And it's often among pretty successful men. But it's also obvious at least some of these men lack deep, sincere, open friendships- the kind that build confidence, even if theyre successful elsewhere in life. I think this bit gets into third spaces and socialization broadly, and societal pressures on men that are changing but not clear

Ben Sasse comes out in favor of sex and babies. Both are great. Highly recommend.

gym, reading and walking are not real hobbies. you need more stuff outside of that. stuff you don't do because of the "benefits" someone told you. stuff you do just because you fucking like it. because it's fun. you need real, unique hobbies.

Nature finally published it! The Reich Lab article on genetic selection in Europe over the last 10,000 years is finally online, and it includes such interesting results as: - Intelligence has increased - People got lighter - Mental disorders became less common And more!

@seld_on The problem is having such travel be practical and safe. The cost of prepping a 0g habitat for people to live in for 40-60 years with supplies and redundancies to every system is possible but even by the best modern abilities asking for far too much.

For a physicist Susskind doesn't sound very smart, these are problems that were worked out by many of his contemporaries decades ago. 0.1 c is a pretty realistic target. That gets you to Alpha Centauri in 42 years. Twice that speed is a stretch goal but still achievable, which gets you to Tau Ceti in 60 years. The interstellar dust and cosmic radiation problems are greatly exaggerated. The interstellar medium is very very sparse and the chance of hitting macroscopic objects is almost zero. Cosmic radiation is a known but manageable problem, mainly a question of shielding. Sure, at high relativistic velocity (e.g. 50% c or greater) these two things become unmanageable and dangerous, but that's not even under consideration. Jumping out to nearby stars in the nearest one or two dozen light-years from Sol is extremely difficult but definitely achievable. The real challenges are not even technical in nature, they are mostly social and psychological, e.g. how do you engineer a society that can maintain self-cohesion over such a long journey.

We're not going to travel beyond the solar system, according to Leonard Susskind. And neither are aliens, coming to visit us. We may not be alone, but we are stuck here for, essentially forever. 1. The nearest star is 4.24 light years away. The fastest spacecraft ever built would require 6,600 years to get there. 2. Surely we can just build faster spacecraft. The problem is to get to anywhere close to the speed of light, we need exponentially more energy. 3. Chemical rockets will just not work. Even fusion rockets won't work. Even 10% of the speed of light is not achievable. The Tsiolkovsky Rocket Equation prevents it. 4. Interstellar dust becomes hand grenades when traveling anywhere close to the speed of light. Ships break. 5. Space radiation will kill us over the time need to travel interstellar distances. Impossible to protect without massive shields, which require massive energy to accelerate and de-accelerate.

A lot of spiritual bros are surprised when they discover that mysticism cashes out in becoming a simple, grounded, practical person. The incense & weird pants don't survive. Turns out that becoming one with the universe is indistinguishable from relating to it effectively

@BirkSepp wanting to authentically express yourself isn't neediness, it's a core trait of being. fear of being seen (which is actually fear of rejection) is neediness

I am protecting myself from being hurt again by shutting myself down. This hurts immensely and I crave not to feel this pain. I want to be seen and heard and this makes me needy. Yet I'm afraid to be seen & heard. So I want attention but also hate getting it.

Books I’d assign to illiterate 14 year olds to make the best of the last few years before they’re unleashing onto the public (assuming they actually take the time to read them) and in order: Red Rising by Pierce Brown Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones Narnia, The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis Heidi by Johanna Spyri Romeo and Juliette by Shakespeare The Screwtape letters by CS Lewis Dracula by Bram Stoker The Brother’s Karamazov by Dostoevsky Selected stories from the Bible Hamlet by Shakespeare The Odyssey by Homer Great Expectations by Charles Dickens The Robbers by Friedrich Schiller

I’m all for avoiding processed foods but putting meat and dairy at the top of the pyramid feels little ridiculous to me. It also reeks of big business influence once again. Basically just shifted from big processed food producers to big meat producers. I feel like the truly healthy stuff is just getting lost in the crossfire.
