@atrupar @grok Can bananas be grown in Puerto Rico, Guam, Hawaii or the Virgin Islands?

@stevesi @pitdesi I wrote a fun paper in college about how traffic was a progressive tax -- not sure it would hold given today's remote work. Tolls on the other side, seem quite regressive.

@wakehamp @SpencerHakimian You seem to take advantage of rigged supply chains though, which is why you don’t like rationalization.

People are not appreciating what a horrendous message the bond market is sending us. Yields are 20 bps higher than November - back when we had +3% real GDP growth. We are having a substantial growth scare, with stocks down -20% from peaks, and yet, bonds have gotten zero bid whatsoever. Our credibility is shot. And you will pay for it. For decades to come.

@dustpen01 @SpencerHakimian Trump was not president 1 year ago (though he was spouting tariff non-sense), and the markets had not priced in his horrendous decisions. The 13% dip is his making and reason bonds yields have increased. The timing is the appropriate one. rationalizing supply chains is lalaland

@wakehamp @SpencerHakimian Still up over the last year, not great, but not the fear porn Spenser’s selling. A small price to pay for rationalizing supply chains.

@SpencerHakimian Yield are about where they were at election time. You’re measuring from a convenient dip in yields in late November. Bad faith.

@jackybh @RayDalio having lived in a protected economy (with significant tariffs) for years, I can steadfastly assure you that corporations like to maximize profits and if you can deliver a super shitty product 35% cheaper than others, it will sell. So, prepare for shittier cars, cloth, cheese, etc

@RayDalio I just hope American manufacturers take this opportunity to make GREAT products. Example: if ford keeps making the crappy products they make, what's the point of protecting them from BYD at the detriment of the American consumer?

One dollar was worth 1 Euro at the beginning of the year. The dollar is declining in value. Now worth 90 euro cents. Your European summer just got more expensive.

@wakehamp @pitdesi The rise of the cost of essentials vs rising wages thing definitely cuts against my understanding. Can you cite that source?

Families with incomes <$200k will not pay tuition at Harvard (also at MIT, UPenn) Great use of endowment dollars, and a fantastic way to increase diversity. The sticker price of college has skyrocketed, but the net tuition has actually been falling meaningfully 👇🏾

@davidsawyer1 @pitdesi the cost of "essentials" (living independently) has outpaced real wages, even after the post pandemic bloom. Despite this, enrollment from bottom 20% is "over represented". Wonder if income level results in different enrollment preferences @ $100k/yr for english majors, et al

@EricTopol anecdotally correct. ER physician said a 0.9 cm kidney stone would pass naturally, vs gpt said only 10-20% chance and best practices required removal.

@ramez @leashless I've seen this playout in my humble Peru. Its just for fun. As much as DJT is rewarding loyalty, my guess is that he will be unable to stand the level of incompetence that he hired, and change will ensue with other maybe less loyal but more competent replacing these

@leashless This is not ambition, Vinay. This is feudal reign. A president choosing appointees based on loyalty to him personally and on who will be willing to persecute and seek vendetta against those who dared opposed him. This has nothing to do with making a better future.

So here’s the question: every *good* presidential team has looked at American and said “change of destiny is too hard: managed decline is the answer.” Maybe what’s needed is the ambition that comes with not really understanding the problem. They believe they can fix it? Try!!!
Ramez Naam@ramez

Matt Gaetz as AG. Tulsi Gabbard as Director of National Intelligence. Some Fox anchor as SecDef. This is clown car territory. Personal loyalty to the king over integrity, competence, or loyalty to country. I couldn't possibly write fiction this absurd. It wouldn't be believable.
