✍️ How a random LinkedIn DM changed everything for @HarlemCapital
In December 2017 I got a random DM from a MBA student at Stanford that had a blog and she wanted to interview me
That random person, Megan Holston, would go on to become a personal friend and Partner at @a16z
I did the interview that month and a few months later she reached out again. She had interviewed someone else who she wanted me to connect with. That person ended up being Linnea Roberts of @GingerBreadCap
After a few meetings, Gingerbread would go on to become our first $1M check and was what led to @jarridvtingle and myself stopping our recruiting processes at HBS and going all in on HCP
That $1M gave us the conviction at a moment where we needed it. We had been raising for 5 months and only had $3M of our $25M target. It was the start of our 2nd year and we didn’t know if we would be able to do HCP full time.
If the story stopped there it would be incredible, but it got 10x.
Linnea would go on to introduce me to her longtime friend, Anilu, who had just joined as the CHRO at TPG.
That meeting would lead to 6 months of conversation with almost every Partner at TPG and them becoming our anchor investor in Fund 1 and our long term partners.
TPG’s anchor check was 20% of the fund target, but they would go on to introduce us to another 40% of the fund target, which helped us raise $40M instead of $25M
So that random LinkdIn DM directly led to $15M, but in reality it led to conviction when we most needed it and us raising $40M
I always tell Megan she helped raise Harlem Capital and I’m grateful for her
The lessons for me are
1) You never know what will come of conversations so put yourself in as many situations as possible, within reason bc you can’t do it all
2) Life is random and there are inflections that can change your life
3) Check your DMs, doesn’t mean you have to reply to them

@SamMendelsohn4 @iamshackelford @gomalomo The one downside is that you attract a lot of people during your hiring process that want a 4dww for all the wrong reasons.
We try to screen those people out during interviews but sometimes people slip through.
