A proud moment for the @WHOEMRO Region. Congratulations to Tunisia on being validated by @WHO as having eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, a remarkable achievement built on decades of national commitment, strong primary health care, community engagement and sustained investment in prevention. With Tunisia joining the list, nine countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region are now trachoma-free: Egypt 🇪🇬, Islamic Republic of Iran 🇮🇷, Iraq 🇮🇶, Libya 🇱🇾, Morocco 🇲🇦, Oman 🇴🇲, Pakistan 🇵🇰, Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 and Tunisia 🇹🇳 This milestone reflects the power of collaboration, coordinated action and long-term commitment to ending neglected tropical diseases and protecting sight for generations to come. #HealthForAll @WHOTunisia | @MinsanteTn | @MfaTunisia

I am increasingly concerned by the continued spread of dengue across #Sudan. More than 75,500 cases and 169 deaths have been reported from 15 out of 18 states as of 24 April 2026, with Khartoum, Al Jazirah, White Nile and Gedaref among the hardest hit. Disrupted surveillance, weakened vector control, and limited access to care are driving sustained transmission of multiple communicable diseases. As the rainy season approaches, the risks will only grow, especially in overcrowded and underserved areas. @WHO is supporting response efforts with health authorities across surveillance, case management, vector control, risk communication and community engagement. Recent trainings in surveillance and clinical management of outbreak-prone diseases will further strengthen the response. But to sustain and scale up the response—and prevent further loss of lives—we urgently need adequate funding and sustained humanitarian access.

.@WHO is calling for urgent support for health systems affected by the conflict in the Middle East across 5 countries – Lebanon, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and Jordan. Hostilities have caused mass displacement (over 4 million) and rising casualties (3300 killed and 30,000 injured). This appeal will support: -essential health services and trauma care -disease surveillance and early warning systems -mass casualty management and national readiness for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear emergencies emro.who.int/emergencies/mi…

Health should be protected at all costs and never be at the mercies of geopolitics, energy blockades and power outages. The situation in #Cuba is deeply concerning as the country struggles to maintain health service delivery at a time of immense turbulence, leading to energy shortages that have been affecting health. Reports show that Cuban hospitals have been struggling to maintain emergency and intensive care services. Thousands of surgeries have been postponed during the last month, and people needing care, from cancer patients to pregnant women preparing for delivery, have been put at risk due to lack of power to operate medical equipment and cold chain storage for vaccines. While I am encouraged by Cuba’s efforts to restore power to support services, people’s health, and the services that support them, cannot be left at the mercies of fluctuating power and geopolitics. Cuba’s hospitals, clinics and ambulances are needed now, more than ever, and must be supported to perform their life-saving work.

.@WHO is increasing its support to countries impacted by the conflict in the Middle East, releasing US$2 million in emergency funds to support the health responses in #Lebanon, #Iraq and #Syria. These resources are from the WHO Contingency Fund for Emergencies, thanks to the support of donors. The funds will help strengthen emergency coordination, trauma care, disease surveillance and ensure access to essential medicines and medical supplies. As casualties rise, so do attacks on health care, which are increasing the burden on the health systems at a time when they are most needed. I urge all parties to choose the brave and life-saving path to peace. emro.who.int/media/news/who…

The rapid escalation of hostilities in the Middle East is deeply alarming. Our Region is already fragile, shaped by years of conflict, displacement, and underfunded health systems. Further violence will not only claim lives directly. It will push already strained health systems closer to collapse, disrupt essential services, and deepen trauma across generations. I urge all parties to exercise immediate restraint and to de-escalate. The protection of civilians, health workers and health facilities is an obligation under international humanitarian law.un

Libya has eliminated trachoma! This is a triumph for the country's communities and health workers, and a great milestone for the Eastern Mediterranean Region. After decades of struggle with this preventable eye disease, Libya has proven that neglected tropical diseases can be defeated even in the toughest of circumstances. Libya is now the 28th country globally and 8th in the @WHOEMRO Region to achieve trachoma elimination, showing what evidence-based action, partnerships and persistence can accomplish. A brighter, clearer future is possible. Every victory counts. @WHOLIBYA | @DrAhmedZouiten 📸: 🇱🇾 National Committee for the Prevention of blindness, Ministry of health Libya

Polio eradication remains one of @WHO’s highest priorities. The progress made by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative #GPEI over the years reflects the collective efforts of governments, health workers, communities and partners who have stood shoulder to shoulder in this effort. Yet, the Eastern Mediterranean Region still bears the final burden of this disease. On the eve of #EMRC72, government officials and partners met at the high-level event “United to End Polio” reaffirming their unwavering political and financial commitment to make sure we #MakePolioHistory. To all our partners: thank you for standing with us. @ChrisJElias | @gatesfoundation | @KSRelief_EN | @SaudiMOH | @MOPHQatar | @mohapuae | @isdb_group | @nhsrcofficial | @qatar_fund | @mbz_foundation | @Rotary | @UNICEF | @gavi | @CDCgov #Partners4Health
