Stargate SG-1 concept art (season 1 storyboard)

STARGATE RETURNS! Yes, it’s true.  14 years after the franchise aired its last episode (SGU’s “Gauntlet”), a new Stargate series has been greenlit by Amazon.  And it’s not a reboot or a wholesale reimagining that will wipe the slate clean on 17 seasons and some 350 hours of Stargate history.  It’s a new series that will be the perfect jumping-on point for first-time viewers while, at the same time, honoring the existing past.  And the reason for that is because this new series was created by longtime franchise veteran Martin Gero who worked on SG-1, Atlantis and Universe, writing such notable fan favorites as The Storm, The Eye, Duet, First Strike, Be All My Sins Remember’d and many more. Joining the production of the new series is Brad Wright, co-creator and co-showrunner of all that came before – Stargate SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe.  Martin has kindly offered yours truly a role on the project as well and I have happily accepted. Martin has been developing this show for a while now.  A little over a year ago, he reached out and asked “Want to read something cool?”.  That something, it turned out, was his pilot script for the new Stargate series.  Now I obviously can’t say too much about the content at this point – but I can assure you that it embraces everything that made the original Stargates so great: heart, humor, rich mythology, exploration, action, adventure, compelling/endearing characters, and that overall sense of optimism and fun that made you fall in love with Stargate. You are all in for a treat. Eventually. Now putting this production together is going to take some time even though Martin has already done a lot of the preliminary heavy lifting, writing the pilot script and series overview that details the show, its world and characters, as well as his plans for the first season and beyond.  Between now and the series premiere somewhere down the line, the writers room must be assembled, stories need to be spun, scripts written, prep started, crew hired, actors cast and, eventually, a new Stargate series produced. It will take a while but Martin shares my philosophy when it comes to dialing in the fandom, so expect to receive updates throughout the prep, production, and post process.  Concept art, behind-the-scenes photos, videos and insights, breaking news and much much more! Get ready.  We’re heading through the gate one more time. Chevron Eight is locked!

@nimlot26 @engineseer Doesn't matter if it does or doesn't. AI has a reproducibility problem. 1 million gamers can play the same cutscene and never see the exact same frames, even if you limited it to 1fps.

@engineseer I don't have any more information than any of you, but due to the fact they said it's not a postprocess it makes it clear it has access to all the g-buffer information so that it can define materiality and lighting for the whole frame based on the rendered inputs.

People keep sending me Daniel Owen's video which basically states that DLSS5 is an instagram filter because it uses just one frame and a motion vector. While his questions were valid and he actually got the replies he needed, his lack of basic technical understanding took him to the wrong conclusion. A lot of you have a very hard time understanding the basics of how a frame is rendered in your game and what kind of information is available before postprocessing and straight up went to the idea is that a rendered frame is like the screenshot you saved on your disk. @ado_tan and his friends have some amazing breakdowns about how different games render stuff. I suggest you to dive on his blog and check all of them out. This way maybe you will understand a bit more about how games are rendered. Here you have an article he wrote about how GTA5 renders a frame. I'm sure it will be eye opening for a lot of you. Till you do your research...I'll just go and play Crimson Desert.

Under one of my posts about SimCity 4, I received a comment like this, among others. And it got me thinking. Have I really wasted my life? I have a fulfilling, fairly high-profile, and well-paying job. I travel a lot, I have a loving girlfriend, a place of my own, and I’m happy. It’s possible that if I played less, I could have learned more languages, read more books, or perhaps chosen a different path in life. And yet, I don’t regret a thing. What about you, gamers?

After this whole debate about DLSS 5 I came to the conclusion that most of the people talking about it are completely unaware of what they don't know...they're on the peak of ignorance and don't even grasp how little they understand. They just heard generative AI and like Pavlov's dog they just start drooling thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators...for the love of Christ...go and educate yourself before raging on the internet for no reason. DLLS 5 is not a prompt based generator...it's not creating stuff based on someone else's images and hallucinates results. It uses the information from the raster to build up a final render frame with the same information but with better lighting and shading... I'll even give you an example on how much of an impact better shading and lighting has. This is a character I've worked on not long ago. On the left you have a raster render, with some bad shaders. On the right you have a render with raytrace on, a much better shader for both hair and skin. They don't even look like the same person...do they? This is what DLSS5 is doing....getting a result like the one on the right(tbh a lot better) at a smaller cost than actually rendering it. Still the same geo, same textures, same light sources. Some of you will go and say the one on the left is better and it's the artist's vision. It's not...it's just the artist's limitation due to shading and lighting constrains. Every single artist out there would love to get the right result in real time.

@AncientGameplay It's just a thing™ in a long string of things™. We should be so fortunate that it appears software gated. Something like DLSS Swapper might allow cross use until the potato computer™ of the future can just do it all under a translation layer or emulation. We are fortunate.

It is just me or the DLSS 5 shots just make me feel "odd" or "unsettled". They're just over the top, and to be honest ALL games shown so far, have the same type of lighting applied, which makes them all feel the same... Same tone, same lighting, everything the same... What I see is NVIDIA controlling game developing here... And in most shots? The "normal" game looks much better with DLSS 4. Artistically speaking. People don't want ultra realistic lighting and faces in all games.

The debate over DLSS 5 brings up an interesting possibility. Regardless of GenAI & the visceral reaction it brings, maybe we DON'T want games to look photo-realistic. Many gamers want their games to look like...games.

We are very fortunate that DLSS 5 is basically software gated. Something like DLSS swapper will eventually allow this tech to run on the potato computer of the future.

@Sanctemify @elsariel79 @hardwarecanucks You know, I am reminded by all of these technologies that are bog standard now, but weren't some years ago. Take your pick. Most of them were good, some of them not so much. I've been at this since computers were monochrome. We can go way back if you'd like.

@Spitlebug @elsariel79 @hardwarecanucks How would they force someone to do it? Forcing it would alienate all consoles, all non 50-series users, all non-nvidia users. They will alienate millions of users by forcing it. This is fake outrage.
