@astacopsis @YouAreLobbyLud @WHO Mostly hantavirus infections occur via rodent dropping/saliva/urine. This variant (Andes) has been known to have human-to-human transmission. Infected people will move around the world a lot faster than infected rats.

@YouAreLobbyLud @WHO Explain to me how this virus is detected around the world all the time with anywhere from 10.000 to 100.000 cases reported a year, with no news or medical warnings or outrage, yet you want to fear monger over a few from a cruise ship?

This is a lethal airborne virus with a low, but non-zero, chance of causing a pandemic that could kill millions. The briefest rational analysis should have led @WHO to conclude that maximum precautions should be taken for this low(ish) probability, highest consequence outcome.

HHS through @ASPRgov and @CDCgov is supporting @StateDept in the repatriation of 17 American citizens from the MV Hondius cruise ship affected by the Andes variant of hantavirus. All 17 are currently en route via @StateDept airlift to the United States, with two of the passengers travelling in the plane's biocontainment units out of an abundance of caution. One passenger currently has mild symptoms and another passenger tested mildly PCR positive for the Andes virus. As of now, the airlift will transport passengers to the ASPR Regional Emerging Special Pathogen Treatment Center (RESPTC) at the University of Nebraska Medical Center/Nebraska Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska before taking the passenger with mild symptoms to a second RESPTC at its final destination. Upon arrival at each facility, each individual will undergo clinical assessment and receive appropriate care and support based on their condition.

If asymptomatic or presymptomatic transmission remains scientifically unresolved for Andes virus, what exactly prevents a quarantined passenger from exposing family members during 45 days of shared air, bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry?

Na medische checks op Tenerife zullen passagiers na aankomst in Eindhoven een intake krijgen: bloedafname en een vragenlijst. Na professioneel en veilig vervoer zullen zij in quarantaine gaan. Thuis of op een centrale locatie.

@1goodtern I loathe the term "overreaction" applied to public health. Or safety issues in general (think airplane safety). I recently got into an argument about weighing "inconveniencing people" vs "reducing risk". Success gets termed as overreaction.

The funny thing is that if public health does its job, the hantavirus stories will just... fade away. Public health is there first of all to *prevent* problems. Ideally that happens without anyone knowing.

A clear example of this issue of unreliable test results in the first few days of symptoms is the British man who is currently in hospital in Johannesburg: ▪️24 APR: Symptoms start ▪️27 APR: 1st test ➡️ NEGATIVE ▪️2 MAY: Repeat test ➡️ POSITIVE edition.cnn.com/2026/05/08/hea…

@apocalobserver @1goodtern @N95Anaesthetist Exactly this. Transmission only when there are physical symptoms might still be containable. Maybe. If people get scared enough. But transmission occurring for weeks with no symptoms?...

People are just not going to be able to get their heads round the slow incubation period of hantavirus. On reflection, thousands of people have probably already been exposed, and those thousands could expose tens, even hundreds, of thousands more.

@MadelynCarys It makes no sense to say "hey, it's not fair that a few kids can't mask, so everyone shouldn't mask at all". Then 1 ill kid can potentially infect everyone.

@MadelynCarys Exactly, if YOU *cannot* mask, the more the rest of us who CAN do makes it safer for everyone! My son is on the spectrum, his school has a percentage of kids who cannot mask, mostly because of sensory difficulties. My son - and the others who CAN masking keeps everyone safer.

Nope. I don’t mask for others; I don’t virtue signal. You don’t like it, stay the fuck home. I have a medial condition where I CANNOT wear a mask & assholes like you cause ppl like me to get more sick and fear going out lest we be harassed and abused by asshole virtue signallers
Ayleim@Ayleim

@MadelynCarys @MeetJess No. When ill, you "mask for others" to reduce as much as possible sending that illness out into the air for OTHER people to breathe in. Even if someone doesn't seem ill, there is asymptomatic transmission . When they're infectious but not showing signs yet (just give it a day!)

I had to spend an afternoon at the children’s hospital A little boy, IV in hand, walking out of oncology in an N95. His parents behind him, unmasked. Something about that moment I can’t shake—the smallest person in the room holding the most responsibility for his own safety.

@Ninawildflower @ProfDanielMuijs Honestly, I end up buying fewer non-school uniform clothes for my kids, since it's mostly stuff for home or just mucking about (no worries about "suitable for school" heh)

@Ninawildflower @ProfDanielMuijs Different country/culture/climate? I'm in a tropical country, almost every school here from preschool to pre-tertiary uses uniforms. They're produced in bulk, (1 standard supplier for the school, so no variation), relatively cheap and durable.

Only one chance in this lifetime… Like watching sunset at the beach from the most foreign seat in the cosmos, I couldn’t resist a cell phone video of Earthset. You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him. I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye. Enjoy.

@Rohnek_Kdosi @MikeShaw42 @Maugie_Games @venturetwins Come to think of it, that doesn't sound too different from treating AI-output as output from humans. My big concern is accountability - when a person say something wrong, we (should!) own it and learn from it. AI doesn't do that.

@MikeShaw42 @Maugie_Games @venturetwins You have a point on the getting along with her sisters thing. Not so much on the improving swimming times, as there a parent could suggest something like visiting a pool on the weekend so she can get some extra practice

@Rohnek_Kdosi @MikeShaw42 @Maugie_Games @venturetwins Thing is, I'm aware - and always reminded my kids (both on the spectrum) that I don't know everything. And will be wrong about things. AI can give a good starting point, and we can explore and check out the options it gives, verifying from other sources too.
