The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) has been #systematically weaponized against #Tamils, enabling arbitrary detention, prolonged incarceration without due process, torture, sexual violence, enforced disappearances, and intimidation, in clear violation of international human rights and humanitarian law, including the ICCPR, CAT, and the Geneva Conventions. Consequently, Tamil genocide victims, both within Sri Lanka and in #exile, remain largely silenced by fear of persecution, detention, or torture. They are targeted not only by the State but also by Colombo-based civil society actors, including the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka, who collaborate with state authorities, rewrite Tamil history, and promote impunity. Genocide denialists and complicit actors exploit universalist and misleading rhetoric — such as “Mass grave all over the island,” “justice for all,” “missing persons,” “human shields,” “crossfire,” “both sides,” “this was several years ago,” and “minority rights” ,to obscure the targeted and systematic nature of crimes against Tamils. Despite this, a corrupt Tamil political figure,a #TamilGenocide denier with no formal training or education in international or humanitarian law, has continued to exploit the #PTA for personal gain, including securing state employment and university scholarships for his daughter, along with STF protection and privileges under the Ranil Wickremesinghe regime. Alarmingly, the current government has continued to provide STF #protection to individuals who intimidate Tamil communities, #falsely claim to represent them, and threaten dissenters under the PTA. At the same time, Tamil genocide deniers misuse the language of “justice for all,” “missing persons,” “human shields,” and “minority rights” to obscure the targeted nature of crimes committed against Tamils, dilute accountability, and normalise #impunity. I suppose you could call us “grateful migrants”.
