Ok, lets have a look at this: Over the last few days a new paper in Science has led to MANY discussions in the paleo community and it appears to have breached containment into the wider world, judging by headlines and google results.

Is the Wikipedia article for Mussaurus ever gonna get rid of this children's drawing that has been sitting there for over a decade?

The blue button is not a suicide button; it’s a genetic memory of a strategy that let humanity survive through millions of years. And here the right comes and calls it a suicide button. Ridiculous.
Matter as Machine@matterasmachine

Predators cannot attack the entire herd. They will have to wait until the herd begins to run away, and then attack the stragglers. That's all you need to know about the team red. Those who press the red button cause panic and deaths.

@riadollz Birmingham is too poor, idk if there’s really a comp for Florida. Florida is where old rich people go to rot on a beach, and also where tons of poor black and Latino folks live. Too big to fit into one part of the UK

if blue can win 58% even on this website that self-selects for the kind of game theory-brained amoral weirdo that would press red, it couldn't be more obvious that it's the correct option

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

@peterrhague @questionableway No, I'm going to pick the option that guarantees I won't die. You have a very simple choice to 100% eliminate all risk. If you pick blue you are trusting that 50% of the whole world has the same level of suicidal empathy you do.

last thing i’ll say about the button is that it’s pretty strange how few red voters change their position upon learning there is a substantial contingent of blue voters

“Would you risk your life for people who are bad at expected value problems?” The answer is straightforward. Either you care about the outcome or you care about looking like a heckin’ good person.

@squiggle888 @plasmarob It's not just strangers, it's about societal preservation, as social animals it's incredibly genetically advantageous to prioritize intraspecific cooperation to ensure species survival. In nature you see this readily with ants and other social insects.

@plasmarob Self sacrifice for strangers is not a genetically advantageous trait and is therefore pretty rare in reality. Most people would actually pick red.

The red button advocates really do seem like morally inferior people Many say I'm signalling virtue I happen to think my view is more virtuous, and there is no actual praxis here so what is the problem? I do donate a substantial amount to the poor Find virtue i guess

@PhthalateSoup Believe it or not cars and stairs have regulations designed to reduce the risk of death. People invented bath mats to lower the risk of slipping. You're implying that the existence of any danger and risk makes mitigation of a different risk somehow insincere or pointless.

Blue is the obvious choice because even if you vote red and it’s supposed to be private, people will still grill you afterward and throw you out the airlock if you voted red. You can see the implicit threat of violence in the quote tweets. That solves the coordination problem!

people invoke game theory for such dumb stuff. if youre optimizing for “i and only i survive and idc abt if anyone else dies and i think that more than 50% of other people share this goal” then red is a reasonable pick. this is, however, a stupid starting point

@DrPhiltill @Robotbeat This is the only reason that makes sense to vote Blue, but I don’t know that it’s entirely rational in the absence of polling data showing how many people are likely to vote illogically and expose themselves to unnecessary danger.
