@wilsoncaster @jessegenet My wife got into needpoint. I built a needpoint design iPad app over the weekend. Just for fun and it’s better than what is currently available.

@jessegenet Serious question. Are you currently building your own software that is usable on your computer? I'm asking because I don't know if that is something people are currently doing or not.

Why would I want a user interface or app if I can just talk to my computer? Why would I pay for software when I can build my own, custom, for nearly free? Why would I send my kids to school? most view AI as nothing more than a way for kids to cheat 🙃 Early 2026 questions…

"hot girl/boy for candidate" apparel is so great. breaks two norms; calling yourself attractive, signalling your politics to everyone. no one with humans for friends can do this.

Sometimes I play with the idea of starting a company which makes really nice electronics that feels as little “tech” as possible. Ie where the user only have to interface with “tech” when absolutely necessary. Audio player that uses little nfc tokens, no screen. TV that just shows what’s input (with a hardware input switch.) Etc Because today it’s actually quite hard to find electronics that are “human first”, almost everything is “tech maximalism”, from toothbrushes and cars to baby monitors and door handles

TODAY I TURN 40. I've written 40 short maxims for creatives and entrepreneurs. 1. Design is more like plumbing than fine art—everyone needs it at some point 2. Concept matters more than the execution. Customers connect with ideas, not just pretty pictures 3. People are shopping on their phones, not computers. Design accordingly 4. Marketing sells good design. Good design cannot sell itself 5. Learn the utility of your craft. If it helps others succeed or make money, it’s easier to sell 6. Make weird shit. Don’t be normal. We’ve got enough of that 7. Look at lots of art. It’s how you refine your taste and understand how things are made 8. Learn to make things quickly. My most popular work is often the least refined 9. You are a salesperson. Every product needs a face. You’re it. 10. You’re building a personal brand whether it’s intentional or not. Make it interesting 11. Build an audience before a product 12. Happy customers become the best marketers 13. Care about your customers. They made you 14. Trolls aren’t constructive. Take feedback from customers, not haters 15. Learn marketing. It’s the only way you’ll feed yourself long-term 16. Market across a few channels. Don’t get monopolized by one 17. Workshop your idea before spending money on it 18. Don’t bet the house on an unproven idea 19. Keep your overhead low. Even wealthy businesses go under by overspending 20. No contractor or employee will care about your business like you do. Don’t expect them to 21. Don’t get locked into long-term contracts. You need a way out if it underdelivers 22. It doesn’t need to be perfect to publish it. Build the ship while you sail it. 23. Success is only experienced in moments, not forever 24. People get lucky. Some folks will get chances you don’t. Persevere 25. Resourcefulness is a superpower. Constraints are great teachers 26. You don’t need partners—especially not at the start 27. Artists need to learn about licensing. It’s how to make money more than once 28. Learn about business finance. People will lend to profitable ideas. Don’t get in bed with private equity 29. Ask for help. Everyone gets stuck 30. Learn a creative process. People think it’s magic. It’s not 31. Don’t steal ideas. It’s lazy, and it burns trust. (And register your trademarks.) 32. People are trying too hard to be brands. Brands are trying too hard to be people. Be a person 33. Be willing to ask the dumbest questions. Acting like you know everything backfires 34. Make a lot of stuff. Only some of it will be good. And a scant few will make money 35. Don’t quit too soon. Give your idea a real heave-ho before bailing 36. Learn to move on. In business, everyone eventually gets burned 37. Get mentors. There’s a lot you don’t know. Learn from their mistakes 38. Giving away free stuff earns you friends, not fans 39. People are busy. Don’t waste their time. Be succinct with your sales pitch 40. You’ll figure it out. and then new challenges will show up

My 9 yo son is vibe coding his drawing mac app. The app was entirely coded from scratch in cursor and Xcode. Has features like drawing, shapes, texts and exports to jpeg. He came up with a way to connect vector points even for drawings. It’s called Drawing Board and he wants to launch it soon. What a time to be alive.

Starting a new woodworking project, a pair of floating nightstands. For simpler projects like this, I typically like to do a couple of rough sketches to work out the proportions and driving dimensions instead of going to full 3d drawings—a lot of the finer details can be figured out during the build. The editable text measurements in @figma have been super helpful for this process.
