wp.me/p36loV-264 CPA is deeply troubled by the JVP–NPP government’s apparent insertion of a pervasive parallel layer of party bureaucracy into the apparatus of the state, from the highest levels of administration to the lowest. Through Praja Shakthi structures and Clean Sri Lanka implementation mechanisms, not to mention openly politicised appointments to senior administrative service positions, there is growing evidence of party-aligned actors being emplaced to exercise influence over decisions that properly belong to the professional public service.

@charith9 @HarshadeSilvaMP should move a motion in p'ment requesting @anuradisanayake to immediately resign from Finance Ministry portfolio and remove ST. May not be legally valid, but politically a challenge for NPP government and him personally.

I heard that the Finance Secretary will not appear before COPF in Parliament on the 30th, as reportedly informed to the COPF Chair. The reason given, it seems, is that he wishes to wait until the President addresses Parliament on the same issue. This is utterly unparliamentary and unconstitutional. No ministry secretary should take such a position. Public finance is a subject of Parliament, and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance is constitutionally bound to respond to summons issued by parliamentary oversight committees. He may, of course, request a different date for valid reasons such as health concerns. However, stating that he cannot appear before Parliament until the Executive President makes an address is a serious mistake and sets a troubling precedent. Such actions undermine parliamentary accountability and democratic governance. Only in a banana republic should this be considered acceptable.
Harsha de Silva@HarshadeSilvaMP

ST has informed me now that he is not able to present himself at the Committee on Public Finance tomorrow to discuss the issues regarding the missing USD 2.5m. This is unacceptable as the Constitution of #SriLanka places full control of public Finance with Parliament and by standing order COPF is DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE for OVERSIGHT on DEBT REPAYMENT among many other important matters. Thus, him being summoned is not an act of discretion but a constitutional duty of the Committee. He has to answer questions by the committee. And he had the opportunity to put the ‘record straight’ if by any chance he was being wrongly accused. But why is he running away? What is there to hide? As the incumbant ST he has a responsibility. He must fulfil that responsibility or if he cannot, he must give it to someone who can. This is also personal to him since he is the first ever politician to occupy this important civil service position; he sat as an MP of the JVP/NPP government and even as a member of our Committee till the day before this appointment. This high handed act shows total lack of respect for the parliamentary system of checks and balances that is so critical post-crisis [that is why the COPF is chaired by a member of the opposition since the 2022 meltdown]. It is a kick in the face of the promised ‘system change’ the people of this country voted for. It is also a breakdown of the undertaking to @IMFNews on governance. His excuse is that President will address Parliament next week and he can come by thereafter. That is not acceptable and unrelated.

These monks get arrested coming from Thailand. But how did their phones get unlocked, private photos pulled out, and blasted all over media? Some of those images are intimate. Some reportedly involve minors. How is that even legal? Those photos didn’t publish themselves. Someone with authority at the airport took them, circulated them, and outlets ran with it. This is a straight-up violation of fundamental rights. Privacy. Dignity. Basic human decency. As a Editor working exclusively on digital media, I have seen this before. When that university girl was murdered at Racecourse, her blood-soaked belongings, her NIC, even her address were being passed around like content. Media showed up at her house within hours, harassing a grieving family. Some of us refused to touch that material. Plenty didn’t. And the worst part? Police were right there then too. Letting people into an active crime scene. So I’ll ask again, who is accountable for this? Why is no one calling this out?

@Azad2546421 @ChandaniKirinde @KusumW All sensitive top State positions plugged with personally trusted party men by @anuradisanayake. What they do are never transparent. Not accountable to society. This Govt blocks all info about their work and reject even RTI applications. Why? Its corruption. Not mismanagement.

@rangaba @munza14 @CBSL What's being spoken about is, top officials have lent their signature for the illegal transfer & it is said, former NPP MP/Deputy Finance Minister, later brought in as Treasury Sec has also approved transfer. Can it be a hacker as @sajithpremadasa claims? Doubt v.much

How the Sri Lanka Treasury was robbed of $2.5 m between Dec 25 and Jan 26 remains a deep mystery. Did officials siphon off the cash, or were they also victims of a scam? The more important question is why the Finance Ministry kept silent and @CBSL appears to have done very little

The fact that Dubai Police could spy on a private WhatsApp conversation of an airline crew member using electronic monitoring operations, which led to an arrest is an indication that there is nothing private in WhatsApp. The end to end encryption claim of Meta is a lie.

In a twist of history, well-known #SriLanka HRDs and cultural figures have come forward to defend the book ban by the @anuradisanayake govt. Next time you may see them defending #PTSA, #OSA and other repressive acts! This is the usual story of pseudo-leftists running a country!

Critically acclaimed Tamil writer @Theepachelvan who travelled from Kilinochchi to Sri Lanka's Ministry of Cultural Affairs in Colombo for talks with authorities to obtain the release of more than 300 of his books seized by customs had to return empty handed without a solution.

For the past 12 days, this issue has been consuming my normal life like “cyanide.” A moving appeal by Tamil author @Theepachelvan who was promised by the minister for culture that his work of fiction seized indefinitely by Sri Lanka customs will be released.
