Extraordinary story of Sir Paul Nurse about what a prof @unibirmingham did for him when he tried to get into uni. As a staff member for 32 yrs, I can say proudly that the story's inkeeping w/ my experience of the length this uni is prepared to go for deserving young ppl.(fr 52')

How amazing to have Nobel Prize winner Sir Paul Nurse as a special guest at one of our graduation ceremonies! 🎓 Sir Paul is an alumnus of this Uni (BSc Biology). His work transformed the world's knowledge of cell biology & it's application to medicine ⏯️ youtube.com/live/v84dZIeio…

If China & Africa stand together, they can chart a path of solidarity and respect for human life over profit. And that is the path towards not only ending the AIDS pandemic, but also ensuring stronger preparations for and stronger response to the next pandemic. @UNinChina @_AfricanUnion @AfricaCDC @UNAIDS

If China, with its world-leading pharmaceutical expertise, can work with African countries to scale up local & regional production of health products for HIV & other medicines, we can unlock prevention and treatment for everyone, and ensure that no one is left behind in the race to #endAIDS. @UNinChina @sidchat1 @ChinaSinopharm

We need to talk about child poverty in #Birmingham. When you drill down to hyperlocal level the differences are not just stark - they are shameful. What kind of society are we that our kids have such hugely disparate chances from birth? Let’s look at some numbers /1

@RichParkerLab @andy4wm Whatever your politics, the region will be poorer without his insight and experience, his vigour and the way he listens to others, even when there’s profound disagreement. Whatever he does next, politics, business, charity or activism, I wish @andy4wm all the very best /5

🏆@NIHR_GSU Annual Meeting Report 2023🏆 🔥Policy Change 🔥New Research 🔥Capacity Building "The NIHR Global Surgery Unit annual meeting is the highlight of the network, giving the chance for face-to-face contact between the leadership and delivery teams from around the world. This year, it took place in the city of Lagos in Southern Nigeria. We met for 3 days with over 150 participants predominantly from Nigeria, but with representation from 13 other countries: Benin, Canada, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Mexico, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, South Africa, Switzerland, UK, and the USA. Although there is a financial and carbon cost to such a meeting, it is incredibly high value in-terms of communication, direction, strategy setting, and capacity building for the future." This problem will not be solved by building hospitals or recruiting doctors or AI or miracle drugs, important though these are. We need sensible public health policies directed at preventing illness. Or we’ll be swept away by costs of chronic disease. bbc.co.uk/news/health-66…
